Help me figure this out.......

I have an MSI K7T266 MOBO (original kt266 chipset). The d*mn thing will not cold start if the cmos battery is in place. I have tried everything; reseting cmos, reassembling system, running bare minimum components, using different memory, updating bios, replacing battery, different bios settings, enabling and disabling USB, reinstalling the OS (which is XP), to getting the latest 4in1's. If I take the battery out, the system will boot. What does this battery do that would cause the system not to boot? Can I run the system without the battery? I get the "testing RTC" indicator on my d-led's which show
green-green-green-RED.

In order to cold boot I must keeping hitting reset. I have had it with this board, but don't want to dish out any money for a new board, but I don't know what else to do.

I am looking at replacing with the epox 8KHA+ or the Iwill XP333. If you can't help me solve, let me know which board I should get.

I am running an xp1800+, original g-force3, crucial 512 mb ram, enermax 340 watt PS, 20gig ibm HD.

well, it sounds as if your mainboard has a problem that can only be fixed by RMA if it's still under warranty.

usually you leave the battery in to ensure that the settings/informations of the BIOS are stored when the computer shuts down. in your case it seems as if the mainboard wouldn't be able to store the settings or maybe even only one setting given and can only start with the basic information stored, and these are settings you can't see and therefore not change.

so i guess the problem lies within defective leads or a bad BIOS CHIP. anyway, it's time to contact the dealer where you bought it.
BTW, here in germany you buy MSI with a 2-year-warranty, maybe that applies for your board or country, too (but what does that help when 2/3 of the boards we got back were still defective or only lastet for a short period of time.

and than get the EPOX, would be my first and only choice after what i've gone through with other manufacturors (and no, i don't work for EPOX ).
but i won't comment on IWILL, never had an IWILL-mainboard. it's just that i really like EPOX for their quality and support when help is needed.

Are you sure that you are inserting the battery correctly. Make sure that Positive + and Negative - of the batt are not in touch and also make sure that you're not inserting the batt uside down.
