Help me like WoW...

My first experience with MMORPG's was Guild Wars. I know, not exactly the prime example of an MMORPG, but I liked it. After getting kind of bored with it, taking a few breaks, and a bunch of the players leaving the game creating a less group oriented environment unless one finds the right guild, I decided to look for other MMORPGs.

I played EvE online for a few months. Eventually I realized that I really was going to have to wait a LOONG time to be good and enjoy any sort of PvPing, and all the CORPS I joined with big promises were miserable. Just people getting 1mil ISK for every person they recruit so they promise you the world.

I also played WoW for a month or two. I only really got to level 20. Honestly, it was like pulling teeth. I boot up the game, and I dreaded the work I was going to have to do. Even at such an early level. Quests were all the same and made me run all the way to some place to kill and collect and bring back. Over and over. I just couldn't stand the prospect of having to do this even MORE. Also, I feel like with all the expansions and stuff I'm just so far behind. Maybe I picked the wrong servers or something but I didn't even have a clue where to go to level up. I had to step by step read guides on where to go to level which levels. I just felt overwhelmed by the massive world and how developed it was, and everyone was running around leveling for themselves and not really interacting.

Anyway, everyone says WoW is tops. I've tried Aion and honestly it has its own bundle of flaws. Tried AoC, and didn't really like it.

What am I doing wrong with WoW? How come everyone says OHH WOWCRACK and I can't even force myself to like it?

Leveling in WoW is terribly boring. For me, the game didn't really start to be fun until the level cap, and frankly, it's only very rarely as fun as a quality single player game. If you're not playing with real life friends, I suggest that you stop now.

leveling in just about any mmo is a grind of essentially the same basic quests over and over again... try to enjoy the story and find some fun people to play with.

Having friends who play helps big time. One of the main reasons I quit was due to my friends stopping which caused WoW to become boring.

WoW is loads more fun when playing with others.

hmmm thanks guys. I don't really have any friends that play it and it makes sense that that would help.

WoW was a lot of fun before the expansion packs since the 0-60 path was fairly slow and there were always people wanting to do every dungeon. If the leveling from 40-50 was going to take a month (of casual play), it seemed worth it to get really good dungeon gear. Now that the leveling from 1-70 is greatly accelerated, the entire 1-70 process is all grind. Nobody wants to do dungeons, so you'll be left doing quests over and over again. The game doesn't get fun again until level 70 because the 70-80 leveling is very slow, so people start to run dungeons again.

I play WoW because I've played it since 2005 and I already know what the end game stuff is like, but if I were just starting this game today, I would be very unimpressed and I would probably stop playing it immediately.

For the most part, 0-70 is fun because of nostalgia and if you have friends to run you through instances to get badass items. If it's your first time through, going at it alone isn't too much fine. Also, as ShawnD1 mentioned, leveling is very fast now. Mounts are dirt cheap and you get em early. =/

You need to find a good, active server. It really does help to know someone who plays who can help you out when you're getting started. Leveling is much much faster now but it can be boring at time (it wasn't the first time I did it).

Agreed, WoW was a blast when about four of my friends from back home played it together regularly for two years. Very fun and great memories. The crew has drifted apart (literally, one interns in a different area of the country every other semester, I went to graduate school in another state, etc.)and we no longer get to see each other much and none of us play MMOs anymore (although I started to play it again on a different faction as I knew it would make me sad that things could not be like they were).

WoW *is*, and probably always *will* be an endless grind.

I myself play WoW 25h/day together w/ wife also...and i hate questing...and you are right...often its just stuff which repeats itself.

But there are other factors which make me want to play.

1) 1 - 80 is levelling, and its true that the REAL WoW starts at 80. So what you see while lvl a toon til 20 is different than what you will do at 80. Eg raiding.
2) the social factor. We have friends online, we have a guild. We do heroics and raids together gearing players. Every new piece of gear..well its tempting.
3) PvP
I like PvP a lot and its a challenge to get season gear (especially arena)...and beating those highly skilled players
4) Gamestyle might be totally different depending on what class you play.

I am on my warlock for an eternty already and love it with all its flaws....just a few days ago i DREADED and try to level up a DK....but i think i just really dont like melee playstyle.

As for other MMOs...we tried WAR about when it came out and it turned out a dud with empty servers. I dont know whether it has changed now....but as said..one of the biggest factors in a MMO is the social aspect...doing stuff with friends...joining a guild...things like that. Thats where WoW is (IMHO) better. WAR felt totally dead..there was no communication going on, nothing as is with WoW.

Edit:

Despite what SOME people say (many WoW haters out there!) i think blizz in general improves the play and TRIES to balance things and tries to make things better. Eg. i think that CAT will be a VERY good expanasion.

Now...its no secret that some people do only PVE (raids)...some like PvP, some HATE PvP..things like that. Its possible now to level through PvP which is a great alternative for people who dont like questing. (Believe me, i do NOT have the nerve to level countless other toons from 1 - 80 But since i like PvP this looks like a very nice way to lvl, just as a side-note.

Edit2:

I like that you mentioned AoC...i played that A LOOOONG time ago and it was actually pretty decent..brings back some memories

My thoughts exactly. Even when I had two level 60 characters raiding regularly, it was still a blast (and VERY rewarding) to jump on a level 30-40 and run some dungeons trying to get gear. Not to mention the older dungeons had a much better feeling to them - Scholomance? Mara? Uldaman? Etc. Something about the Burning Crusade dungeons just turned me off. Either they were far too easy and you breezed through them without much feeling of reward, or they were too hard and it took too long to run back to where you died. The trend continued with WotLK.

Unfortunately Blizzard doesn't seem to see anything other than the end game, and would rather eliminate the progression to get there than make it enjoyable. IMO, progression is the time you spend from level 1 until level 80, not the time you spend at level 80 trying to get enough gear to join a raid. Would it really kill them to revisit some of the old starter areas like Dethknell and revamp the quests?

Try Lord of the Rings Online? It was fun for a little while. I did stop, to give WoW a try, oddly enough. I liked WoW less than I did LotRO. Dungeons and Dragons Online is free now too (totally free, or are there catches?). It's from the same makers of LotRO, and I've heard it's not bad. It's free, so could give it a try too without cost.

The problem with my group is that we get together, try and get something working (like raiding, or serious Arena teams) and someone figures out that we're screwed unless we expand the group or change characters or something like that. Then everyone gets jaded and it falls apart. It's happened a few times now.

I've quit and restarted WoW a few times, because I honestly don't really enjoy the game a whole lot. It's fun, but not fun enough to be worth putting all of those hours into unless you're going to be playing with friends.

That said, they need random dungeons like they had in Diablo. Raiding the same dungeon for the 20th time doing exactly the same thing is very boring.

I thought leveling and quests were great. 1-50 or so was very fun. And going to Northrend at 68 was REALLY fun for the first few level ups.. I hated Outland.

I played it like a SP game, rarely grouped or did dungeons. Doing a PUG for a dungeon was like pulling teeth. Even with competent people I found dungeons boring.

I did play lots of BG's, that was great fun.

For me, once I started getting near the level cap, my interest in the game waned. The idea of doing dungeons to get gear did not interest me. I didn't want to raid or play w/other people.

That would be awesome. I would love to see dungeons where the layout changes and the number of monsters is completely random.

This sentence here, 'I only really got to level 20. Honestly, it was like pulling teeth.' pretty much tells me you will not enjoy any type of MMO game since they all require leveling up or 'grinding' as some people call it. Leveling with others makes the process easier and more enjoyable but your post pretty much tells me you are not into these types of games especially considering the first 20 levels of any MMO is the easiest part. Just my opinion based on what you wrote.

Well I leveled to 20 without once interacting with another player, I really think for me the lack of fun stems from not having people I know play it.
