I built a intel 915PBL and P4 3.4ghz system. I can get it to POST and into the bios but can't get it to recognize either drive. there is no power to the dvdrw.

I am using an antec case and coolmax 400w PSU with the power supply adapter (20 to 24 pin). there is a molex(4pin) adapter on the mobo, do not know whats it for?

SPEC:

Intel P4 3.4 on a Intel 915PBL
xfx PCIE VC
2x256 mb DDR2
Seagate 160gb IDE and NEC 3500A dvdrw on one and only ide channel
CoolMax 400w PSU

the system is running but i do not have access to drives.

i have the 4pin P4 connector and the ATX 24pin ps connected.

Do i still need to connect the molex adapter?

Sounds like you need to adjust the hardrive settings in the bios. They should be under "integrated peripherals". Sata is sometimes disabled by default.

Try just using the 20 pin mobo connector + the 4 pin molex on the motherboard instead of the adapter. Check the mobo manual, as it shows configurations for a 20 pin and a 24 pin connection. But no power to the DVD? Might want to check your molex connections to the drive and if that doesn't work check the PSU.

What kind of HD? SATA or IDE? If it's IDE check your jumper settings on the drives.

I'm using the same board and processor and it worked fine from the first POST.

I have a samsung 160 ide drive as master and nec 3500ag dvdrw as slave. I do not have any power to either one.

SATA is disabled. I do not see the Primary and Secondary ATA drives in the boot options menu.

There are 3 main power connectors on the board:

24 pin ATX (i am using the 20 to 24 pin adapter that came w/PSU)
4 pin P4
4 pin molex (its illustrated in the manual but mentions nothing about its use).

The PSU is coolmax 400w

the VC is xfx 6600gt PCIE.

My system temps are: 53C for cpu and 35C for the board

You need to have power going to these drives. Try making each one a master on a different IDE channel to see if that works.

Upon further inspection. I found that 2 of the power rails have exposed wiring. This could be causing a short and not providing enough power to the drives.

I do not want to use the two good remaining rails to power the whole system.

In short Newegg sold me a defective/returned merchandise. The reason i suspect it because the PSU came with 2 extra adapters of same type (2x2 p4 connectors).

Coolmax has no warranty exchange or support. NE wants me to ship the drive to them for RMA, but i do not want to take chance of having them ship me another refurbished/returned drive and do not want to have any out of pocket expense of shipping it back to NE.

Do i have any recourse in getting this squared away?

So Newegg is telling you they'll replace the faulty PSU and you don't consider this a solution? What else do you want? Do you want Newegg to make a new one magically appear? I have a feeling the wrong thing was shipped by accident. I've ordered thousands of dollars worth of stuff from newegg without a single problem, so I'd say the likelyhood of them not taking care of you is pretty slim.

Because of how fast Newegg is, you'd probably have the new PSU in a week.

I do not want to send it back to them at my cost. Why should i pay more for have this rectified when it was an issue or problem at their end. This is "suppose" to be a "brand new" item and it is clearly defective.

This is what i ordered and when i ordered it i assumed it would be brand new and free of defects. I want them to stand behind the products they sell.

I have ordered alot of stuff from them and never had any issues. In fact when i bought refurb items i was surprised that they worked well and had the necessary accessories included.

This is first major "non clearence or non refurb" purchase @ NE.

I've bought a ton of stuff from Newegg too (refurbed stuff too) and last summer I got a bum brand new Lite-On DVD burner which they replaced with another brandnew model. I was pissed about the down time and having to pay to ship it back to them but they did make it right. Sh1t happens, wipe and go on.

i am trying to get them to refund the PSU price and partial shipping since this was a multiple item order. but they insist that they wont refund my SH cost to RMA.

Legally, i can stop or contest my CC charge.

I am hoping for a compromise in terms of me sending them my 400w @my cost and them sending me a 450 or 500 watter in return @ = cost of 400w.

RMA=Upgrade

From what I have read in your three posts or so, you sound like you are not very experienced in building PC's. I would suggest that you find somebody who can help you before you assume the power supply is bad.

way to make assumptions. I think that if his rails are exposed, that might be a problem. I had a similar problem with a true power 400watt i got from newegg. It was my fault though.

I am not assuming anything, including the fact that his rails ARE exposed. I have read three (or more) threads from this guy, and he just sounds like he needs a LOT of help, and really doesn;t understand this building thing (not plugging power cords in all the right spots, RTFM, etc...)

So, if someone experienced could help him, he might get his problem solved. We can;t really see everything without a detailed video, and that just isnt going to happen.

You probably have more data to make your conclusion than I do, since you obviously have more expierence with the OP's posts.

OP. Don't expect NE to refund your shipping. My brother made the awful mistake of buying a POWMAX case with PSU. After the 4th one blew, he bought a TT (not nessiarly the best choice, but at least it still works after 3months. The best powmax lasted 3 hours). Fedex slowly got rich off of my brother from him shipping back all those RMA'd psus.

this is my 16th build. I have never had any issues with previous builds, although 13 were AMD's. But these new specs that intel is pushing, have got me dumbfounded.

I got this bundle from retailedge and have spent a ton on upgrades.

This was not my first choice for a PSU. I hastily bought a Apower 500w from geeks without realizing the new P4 S775 and PCIE have different power requirements.

With all your experience and research you would know that a standard power supply works in the larger connectors, and there are adapters for SATA power, so any old PSU with enough wattage on the rails will work fine.

I would expect them to. Thats all part of running an honest business. Just because most companies wont, does not make it right.
