Im just building a new PC with Athlon XP1800+, Soltek SL-75DRV4 Mobo + Thermaltake Volcano 7

I want to use Arctic Silver but I need to remove the thermal pad on the HSF slug first. The manufacturers of Arctic Silver reccommend to use a "lint free cloth" - what is this? Where can I get one easily?

Also they say to use a "xylene based cleaner, acetone, mineral spirits, or 99% pure isopropyl alcohol... " and a "low residual solvent (High-purity isopropyl alcohol or acetone will work)" - to clean the mating surfaces. What form do these take and where can I get some?

Also I've got a Chieftec Case: My Case, which came with a decent side fan and another (Papst) fan that I brought. Where is the best place to put the 2nd fan for efficient cooling?

Any help be great!!!

A cotton handkerchief or a bit of a cotton suit shirt etc is lint free.. Isopropyl Alcohol is easily available from a Chemists (Drug store in USA speak) ..

As for where to put that second fan, If the Chieftek has a second opening at the rear near the CPU, I`d put it there, the more hot air being sucked out near the CPU the better

You can use GooGone or vegetable oil to remove the PCTC pad as well using a plastic scraper. Follow up w/ the Alcohol and carefully inspect the HSF surface for scratches, which can be removed w/ mild lapping.

Fingernail polish remover is a dilute solution of acetone in water, as well as a bunch of other chemicals. It's not really the best thing to use to clean off the heatsink. You can get pure acetone at an auto parts store. It's usually sold in big metal cans near the paints in an auto store.

Don't use Goo Gone on the HS or CPU core. From Arctic Silver's Web Site:

<< Never use any oil or petroleum based cleaners (WD-40, citrus based grease removers and many automotive degreasers) on the base of a heatsink. The oil, which is engineered to not evaporate, will fill in the microscopic valleys in the metal and significantly reduce the effectiveness of any subsequently applied thermal compound. >>

Which is why you use Isopropyl Alcohol for cleanup. It's availible most anywhere i.e. Grocery, Drug stores etc.

Alcohol will not remove the Goo Gone, just like it will not remove a thermal pad or thermal grease. This paragraph from Arctic Silver's Web Site also applies to Goo Gone, WD40, etc.

<< Once you have applied a thermal grease or melted a thermal pad onto a heatsink, it is impossible to remove all of the grease or pad from the microscopic valleys in the heatsink using standard cleaning chemicals and paper or fabric towels. Any subsequent thermal material will be applied over the remnants of the original material. >>

Why not use Gas. Ive done this a couple of times on heat sinks and it works Great.

"""also in uk i cldnt find the stuff """

I bought it in the Chemists, i doubt Superdrug or Boots would have it, but a standard dispensing chemists like NuMark in most towns should carry isopropyl alcohol. White spirit and rubbing alcohol is not recommended!. If the HS has a pink pad of death on it, a thumbnail is a good method of getting the worst off
