Last week, my computer won't boot up. As I look at my capacitors on my motherboard. They look very bad. The capacitors has leaked. I can replace the capacitors with similar or better ones from Digi-key or I can get a new motherboard. I'm very good with the soldering iron. I know the consequences if I do attempt to fix it. My motherboard doesn't beep. Everything works on the motherboard. I check the components with my multimeter.

If I do get a new motherboard, it won't be a very good one. I have looked at either INTEL and AMD based motherboards. Both are good, but INTEL's Pentium 4 (Northwood) is costly. AMD motherboards are not expensive and they give me more value for my money. My previous motherboard is an AMD based motherboard and it much faster than INTEL.

Check this article: http://www.digitalvideoediting.com/2002/05_may/features/cw_aeshowdown.htm

Most software that I used is latency and it does tons of math. Pentium 4 is slow compared to Athlons in FPU wise. Pentium 4 is good for gaming because of its wide memory bandwidth to fetch and send data to the memory and processor.

The motherboards that looked at is:
ABIT KG7-RAID (Socket A)
ABIT BD7-RAID (Socket 478)
ABIT BL7-RAID (Socket 478)
ASUS P4B (Socket 478)
ASUS P4B-T (Socket 478)
EPOX EP-8K7A+ (Socket A)

The memory and processor that I will use with the motherboards listed:

2 Corsair PC2400 DDR 256 MB (512 MB)

AMD Athlon XP 1900 MHz+
-- or--
Pentium 4 2000a MHz (Northwood)

The motherboards in the list are combatible with my hardware except EPOX. I don't know if that EPOX motherboard model is combatible with my hardware. My hardware is:

ATI Radeon /w 64 MB DDR VIVO
Soundblaster LIVE! MP3 + 5.1
LINKSYS 100BaseTX
IBM 60GXP 40 GB
IBM 75GXP 20 GB
ASUS 8X DVD/40X (E608)
TEAC 1.44 MB FDD
IOMEGA ZIP100
IWIN Q500 Full Tower ATX/AT case

My broken motherboard is ABIT KA7-100. The processor is 800 MHz 'Classical' and the memory is four KingMAX 128 MB SDRAM modules. I will like to get the EPOX motherboard that I listed but I'm worry if it is combatible with my hardware. I was thinking on getting ABIT KG7-RAID because it is cheap.

I don't do a lot of gaming. My previous system was fast enough for both gaming, video capture, watching TV, DVD watching, and 3D rendering. I would like to do dual OS booting (Windows & LINUX).

Can anybody help me picking a motherboard.
