Help! Printing Problems with XP

I have a HP6L and it was merrily chugging away.
Of course, in XP my cd burner wasn't working properly,
so I installed Via 4in1 4.35 or whatever the latest version was on the website.
Now my printer refuses to work!!
I can't figure it out, the printer and connection and everything is ok, but windows can' make it print.
whenever i restart the pc, it prints out a single line of garbage and then thats it.
I know the problem lies with XP...
Please someone HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!
its a Gigabyte Motherboard with the Via KT133a chipset.
i tried removing the printer, and the lpt1 port,
on restarts it finds them and the print but then still can't print.

i'm going nuts and i need it to work so someone please help!!

what type of printer do you have and how is it connected to you computer? USB or Parrallel

Sounds Like HP not XP, I am only guessing that you have uninstalled the drivers and installed the latest version.

Also try performing the disconnected self test, if that doesn't work check you printer cart.

Its a HP6l laserjet connected to the parallel port.
The printer self tests ok, prints out the test page just fine. The cable is fine to I checked it on another pc.

The printer drivers are also the default ones which come with XP.
Now its been working fine for a month, but when I put in the via 4in1 XP can't print at all.
It does find the printer becasue if i remove it on startup it finds it and automatically installs the drivers.

any ideas??

Have you tired deleting the printer out of the printer window then using the add printer wizard to add the printer?

I have tried that also, it does not work.
The only soloution it seems is to reinstall windows.
I think i'll just go back to win2k as that worked perfectly.
XP.. either the burner doesn't work or the printer......
