Help quick! (router troubles) (UPDATES!!!)

Ok, I have a 4 port Linksys router and 3 PCs all in a network. I just started running a Counter-Strike server off of one of them. I was told that many problems (players getting dropped for no reason) had been fixed in the latest firmware. So I go and download it and try to upgrade. Nothing happens, it just says the server cannot be reached. So I think maybe I should unplug everything and try it again. So I unplug PC, router and cable modem. Power back up and the Diag light on the router keeps flashing and I cannot connect to the net. I have no idea what I did. Can anybody offer some help so I can get my network back on the net?

I'd try pressing the reset button and killing all the information in the firmware (after making sure you have it already somewhere else, of course). Then flash the firmware again with the v1.39 firmware just to make sure that it takes, since you seemed to have problems before.

You're putting in the router IP as 192.168.1.1 (unless you changed it) and your password in the firmware flash app, right? I can see that creating a problem if you didn't. Not questioning your knowledge, but it never hurts to have a second set of eyes on every step, y'know?

Yeah, I did.

Right now I don't even care about the new firmware. I just need to get this baby back up. I'm leaving for vacation Wed morn and need this thing up while I'm gone. Please help!

Sorry, I was writing with colloquialisms.

By killing all the information in the firmware, I meant erasing it. When you update the firmware, you &quot;flash&quot; it. I'm not exactly sure where the term originates from, but that applies to firmware, BIOS, etc. You flash your BIOS, flash your firmware, etc. And you don't get arrested for indecent exposure, either.

Just reset the firmware (that should wipe all the information in it and reset it to factory configuration, I believe) with the instructions in the manual (I think it's hold the reset button until the light flashes and then power it off, something like that, but I'd check just in case...I've never had to try it before), and then once it's back up and running see if you can access it with your web browser. If you can, set up the DNS, gateway, etc, again and see if that works. Check the version number, too, to see if the 1.39 firmware was flashed correctly. If it was, then you should be done. If not, then try flashing the firmware again. Good luck.

I cannot even get into the browser options. It seems like I must get rid of this red blinking light before I can do anything. I saw in the manual that if you leave the power off for a certain period of time it will reset it's self. Does anybody know how long?

I don't know. The manual says to power off the router for a few second, and that should clear up most problems. It says to hold in to reset button for 5 or 6 second to reset it. Did you try that? Try reseting it with the button, then unplug it for ten second or so, then power it back on and reboot at least one of the machines to see if you can access it again. If the light is still flashing on the router after you reset it and then power it off, try calling Linksys. You might have a problem with the router itself, then.

I'd really like to thank you for all your help. I really appreciate it. I ended up calling Linksys and the said if the red light keeps blinking that I must have fried the board in the router or messed it up somehow. So I'm getting a RMA. Thanks again for all your help.

Bummer. Well, there's always a risk involved in updating firmware, which is why they say never do it unless it fixes a problem that needs resolution in your particular situation. When I update firmware, there's always a brief moment for me of nervousness, because I've had BIOS flashes go wrong before, both video and motherboard.

I had this same kind of problem a while ago. The first tech at Linksys said I needed a new router. They told me that they would email instructions on the RMA. After three days and no email, I called back and got a guy who said I only need to flash the firmware. He sent me an email with the file (which I got through my yahoo email account on another PC), and ran it at home. After the new firmware was installed, the little flashing red light went out, and everything was fine once again. It sounds like you've done this already, but it saved me quite a bit of time since I didn't have to wait for the exchange of parts through the snail mail. Either way, good luck.

I just found my recept in a stack of junk so I'll be able to go and get a replacement tomo (bought the router at a local PC show). Woohoo!

If you decide to get a different brand instead of a straight replacement, I've heard good things about the NetGear routers, but the older, clear, D-Link routers need to be hooked up via a serial cable to update firmware and settings, so I'd skip those. I think the newer ones are different.

I really like the Linksys models, though. I have two of them, and they work like a charm. Not too shabby looking, either.

I have one of the one-port routers and I just got a 4-port earlier in the summer, also. I already have an 8-port 10/100 switch (Linksys, no less...they even match...how cute!) that I'll be hooking the 4-port up to, but hey, you can never have too many 10/00 switched ports, no?

That's not all...my roommate at school has two switches himself, a 5-port 10/100 and a huge 16-port switch with 16 10 Mbps ports and one 10/00 uplink port. The damn thing has two cooling fans on it. I think we have the only room on campus with a 10/100 fully switched network in it. Not even the buildings are 10/00--just our room.
