help, video card problem

I just got my ATI Radeon 9600 Pro today. After I put in the card, my windows xp system keeps saying "delayed write failure", having trouble access hard drives. And every time reboot, it keeps checking all hard drives before entering windows, which doesn't work anyway (delayed write error).

I even thought about reinstall windows XP, but when in the only option for installation is to format first (saying something that HD read error). But once I put back my old video card, everything works fine again.

I searched through the forum, found that: "Disable large system cache if its enabled. In the advanced system properties. Performance settings advanced set memory usage to programs."
So it seems more likely a system resource problem.

But still, every time entering windows, it still keeps checking my HDs.

Is there any way to stop this nonsense checking?

did you not uninstall the old vid card drivers first before installing the new vid card..?

sometimes XP needs an assist on detecting devices..by you cleaning up/out the old drivers ..there is with XP the option to do a Repair but..I'd try the drivers first...

Uninstall? My old card is Rage 128 Pro. It was just Plug & Play. Not sure how to uninstall its driver... any idea?

In the Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs: are there any entries for ATI at all? if there are, remove them.
if not, you are correct, and windows has installed minimal drivers for said card.
Is it listed as an ATI Rage pro? or vga device?

I just found where the conflict is.

I couldn't stay any longer, so reinstalled a fresh copy of windows. Everything was fine, until I installed the Maxtor Ultra ATA/133 PCI Adapter Card, where my other 3 HDs connect. The disk check thing comes back again every time enter window, and it's checking the 3 HDs that connects to the card.

any resolution for it?

I'm thinking maybe Disk Indexing is turned on, and windows is going to thrash the drives for a bit.
Look in the device manager, is the card listed there, without any problems? Try getting newest drivers if any from Maxtor website.
Lastly, disable the indexing service in XP, and rebbot. see if that helps.

The driver I installed for Maxtor Ultra ATA/133 PCI Adapter Card was directly downloaded from Maxtor website.

I disabled all index servicing. Still, it runs disk check when I reboot window.
