Help. Weird problem.

I started having problems with my comp a couple days ago. I would boot up my comp and after a couple minutes it would lag horribly. I looked in task manager and it says that one of the system svchost.exe's is using 99% of the cpu's power. If I end the program that's causing my comp to lag, my sound stops and the graphics reverts to a crappier setting. I have no clue what's wrong. Is it a bad driver or a virus or something? Hope someone knows how to fix this. Thanks folks.

Did you try a virus scan yet, with a good, fully-configured antivirus program? If you need one for free, click hiere for a very good free one, plus configuration suggestions. Uninstall other antivirus first, so they don't clash.

Once it's installed, run a full Scan My Computer and see if it finds stuff.

Downloaded and updated the antivirus you recommended. Left it to scan overnight. It didn't find anything.

When SVCHOST.exe is taking up 99-100% of your resources constantly, your pc will seem very slow and unresponsive, almost like a viral infection or spyware.

The cause is automatic windows updates. Go into control panel and turn off automatic updates and the svchost.exe will go back to normal. It happens when the windows installer gets corrupted and the easiest fix is to just turn it off and do updates manually from time to time.

I never let microsoft take the reins of my computer anyhow- I'm sticking with WM10 so I can get by drm and put music I'm entitled to on an iPod.
