This should be a simple matter, but I'm stumped...

I have 2 computers. One called "Office" and another one aptly named "Room", this being the main one.

My equipment:

Room - 1-Gigabit , 1-100 Megabit.
Office - 1-100 Megabit
1 Xbox 360
2 Standard DSL Modems
1 D-Link 4 port + Uplink HUB
Plenty of Ethernet cords (non interlaced or whatever they are called).

Originally, I had one modem for each computer. Rarely both of them needed to get online, so I just plugged-unplugged them and voila. However, me being more lazy but still cheap (not buying router) want to share a connection between the 2 computers.

Using the network setup wizard, I established a workgroup and both computers are able of transferring files between them, but "Office" had a "Limited or no Connectivity" error. Couldnt repair, downloaded MS patch, issue continued. Automatic IP and DNS on both computers.

Right now, I have settled down having 1 modem plugged to the HUB, which is plugged to each computer. We can share files, but only 1 computer can be online at the time.

This being said, I also want to plug my 360 somehow, on the HUB...

I'm not worried about having bandwith problems, yet I know buying a router would solve all my issues...

Thank you all!

So what is the problem? sounds like you know what you need to do. a cheap router is the only way to go.

you only get a single IP from your ISP, hence only one device at a time works online.

An acceptable interim solution (go buy a router) would be to use Internet Connection Sharing assuming you're using reasonably new Windows OSes.

Just connect the modem to one of the ports on Room and connect the other port to the hub. Follow these directions and you should be all set.

Very true, but this could be the thing that pushes him over the edge.

Wow... I just picked up a wirerless G router+4 port switch for $15.... someone needs to rethink what he/she is doing. My time is worth money ($33 an hour according to my last paycheck). I don't know what kind of job you have, but if you spend more time "engineering" a "solution" then it costs for you to make $15 at a job, then you arr wasting your time, because THE solution is to go get a router.

1, or 2 hours (depending on the geographical location) flipping burgers at you local fat and cholesterol joint.

Or might be that you have a computer part to trade for a used 802.11b Router, there is a lot of guys that have 802.11b Routers for less then $10.
