Hi, I hope somebody can help me out?
I have a P4 2.54 with a MSI 648 Max motherboard running with a 1 gig of ram, GeForce 4 TI 4600, Creative Sound Card.
The problem is I'll play game i.e Star Fleet Command 3, Tribes 2 (yes I know), Never Winter Nights and others for a while and the system will hard lock with a tone in the speakers from what the current playing sound was. No way to Control, ALT, Delete out. I need to shut down with the power button. The Machine comes back up fine and shows no sign of the shut down.
I tested the RAM, had a bad RAM stick and replaced it and added another 512 MB stick. That not being the issue I started to monitor the system voltage and heat. I noticed the +3.3v number was running about +3.18 or lower. I changed out the power supply still the same issue with the hard lock. The +3.3 volt now runs at +3.28, never changes from that.
I stared thinking it might be CPU heat related. I downloaded the SETI program ran it for an hour and half before it crashed but not hard locked. I don't know if it is related, could be. One thing I did notice that the CPU heat numbers were not changing over a gradual curve but would jump from 38 to 45 or higher back down to 38 in a matter of seconds. The system temp would stay at or about 31 or 32 and never really change from that until the load is off the CPU. With no load both the CPU and system run at or about 24 and 29.
My thinking is the CPU is hosed and not having an extra one to replace it for trouble shooting I though I would ping this group for ideas. I understand that those numbers are not high but what concerns me is the quick temp swing.
