The main trick to apache is to learn how to configure the httpd.conf file (or whatever conf file name you use). It's not particularly hard, but does take a little time to get used to the directives and no one site I've seen does this as well as apache.org.

I would be sure to read through most of the directives on apache's site beause failure to do so might leave your webserver open to attacks. Apache.org updates thier site whenever there is a security change so be sure to check for any updates.

If you're too impatient to read the manual, or you cant figure out how to edit httpd.conf by the comments in the file, you might as well install IIS.

Here are a couple of directory settings I have on one of my production servers:

# Start Apache Services Port Configuration
Port 80
Listen 192.168.128.27:80
#<IfModule mod_tls.c>
# SecureListen 192.168.128.27:443 "SSL CertificateDNS"
#</IfModule>
# End Apache Services Port Configuration

DocumentRoot "sys:/apache/nwdocs"
<Directory "/">
Options FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride None
Order deny,allow
deny from all
</Directory>
<Directory "sys:/apache/brdocs">
Options FollowSymLinks MultiViews
AllowOverride None
Order allow,deny
allow from all
</Directory>

Keep in mind that there are other directives that need to be set. These include cn names, htaccess files, aliases, virtual servers, and of course any other additional directives or modules you care to load/set. Stick with it...it's a lot more secure than IIS.

He's admittedly looking for easy and quick, so Apache probably isn't what he's looking for.

He's also admitted that he hadn't thought about security. If he cares about it now that he's realized .... IIS wouldn't be the way to go. IIS has more holes in it than a guy who's ratted on the Mafia.

Apache can be setup quick and easy.

You should be able to walk through the httpd.conf file and have it setup within an hour.

well, setting up a basic apache server is pretty quick and easy for me. I dont need it for anything more than checking my site on the net, showing friends any changes and just basic....basic stuff like that. so for me, all i do is d/l a .msi package for apache, double click and install (w/o changing much of the settings) and then edit the httpd.conf file.

since i have a linksys router, i bypass port 80 (cuz RR blocked the web port 80) and do a search in the file for the 2nd mention of "80". The first one is just an example IP of 192.168.1.1 or something like that. But, for the 2nd entry of "80", I just make it "8080" and im done. if u use the basic port 80....then i dont think you have to change anything.

after you've done all this, delete everything in the htdocs folder and put in everything you want on your site.

that is pretty much it. now, if you wanted to go into security and adding server scripts, you will have a tougher time and will need more info on that. but it sounds like all you wanna do is simply get a website going for personal use. it doesnt get any easier than what i mentioned, but if i didnt coherently explain something or if you have further Qs, do ask.
