HELP with data recovery from Maxtor

the drive contents are viewable in XP but i cannot delete them, transfer them

the drive has some unreadable areas according to XP

i tried to use the maxtor utilities but they extract to floppy

i dont have a floppy drive anymore

can some one suggest a cd bootable hard drive utility?

did you just do a clean isntall? ON another hard drive?

I did that last night and had files I couldn't open, folders i was denied access to, etc

Tools folder options > View > at the bottom uncheck simple file sharing

now right click the folders with the files you are having problems with. go to security. Add you user name and give youself full permission.

Click on the advanced button uncheck inherit permissions

remove any funny users from the list
go over to owner
click on your username and check replace owner on subcontainers and objects

hit apply and close out. repete as needed.

my drive was a storage drive from another setup that has since been parted out

this drive worked on that system but there was something funny about it that made it not work right in other systems

im looking into windows based data recovery apps

is r-studio 2.0 the best out there?

after the recovery i plan to do a full scan of the drive to see if its reliable enough to continue use

I think Adul is right. If it works in the original system and not any others, you just need to "take ownership" of the files using the method he described. It's a rights issue, data recovery is not necessary. The drive is fine. The data is fine. It's just protected.

im a bit lost on the process here:

is it control panel, admin tools?


edit OMG that you so much, it figured it out and got it to work

whats funny is i usually install as admin but some times XP has me as another user, admin level but not admin

that might be the issue here
