Can anyone help with a problem I'm having with an Itunes server in my home network? I can't figure out why when I load new songs onto an Itunes server (not local harddrive), those songs show only in the "library" of Itunes on the computer used to load it, but not in the "shared" section of Itunes, and thus no other computer on the network sees them.
Here's the situation: I had loaded and bought many songs onto Itunes which were stored in the c: drive of my old computer. I've since built a new computer and use the old computer for my wife. Both computers (and more in the future) are networked by wire to a router, which has a Network Attached Storage (NAS) also on the network. The NAS device (D-Link DNS-323) has a built in ITunes server, amongst others like UPnP or whatever.
Instead of copying over the Itunes songs to the new computer from the old, and so that others might also be able to utilize the same Itunes songs, I moved the whole Itunes folder from the old computer's harddrive (c and onto the NAS. Everything is fine and I can access that library as a shared library by setting each Itunes client to look for shared music. It sees the NAS and puts it in the lefthand column as a "shared" item. Every computer has access and can rock out! Great!
But, now I want to load some new music onto the server. So, I use the cd drive of my new build and set my I tunes music folder (edit>preferences>advanced>general>set Itunes music folder location) to the NAS device. Should work, right?
Well, it does and don't. Let me explain. When I load a new audio cd to download into Itunes, it downloads it alright into the NAS folder I selected. I see the music there onthe NAS (not local drive) using windows explorer. However, and here's the rub, the music doesn't show in the "shared" item volume on Itunes, but only in the local "library" volume as if the music were resting on my c: drive all over again! So while 5000 songs are listed in "shared" volume, the new 10 songs just ripped are shown in the client library, despite all residing on the NAS device.
And the other computer on the network cannot see them!
So, how do I get them all in the one place, so no switching back and forth between shared and local library? any ideas? Did I do something to reserve some right in my machine that is not authorized to others?
any ideas appreciated.
