Hey guys (and gals). I just installed my new lite on 40x12x48x and I tried it out a few times. It's taking ridiculously long to copy cds for some reason. At 40x it took 13 minutes! At 24x, it was less than 50% done at 8+ minutes. I have no idea what's wrong. HELP!

My system specs if you need them:
Epox 8K7A+
Tbird 1.2Ghz
2 Western Digital 30gig
Toshiba DVDrom
Soundblaster Live mp3
MSI GeForce2 Pro

I used the Nero Burning-Rom software that came with the drive.

i went under device manager/cd rom/liteon/settings and clicked DMA on. This time, at 24x, it took 8 minutes. Is there still some problem? The last HP cd-rw/dvd combo drive i had sucked also. As far as IDE cables, I have both hard drives and each cd-rom drive as a master (b/c i have a raid mobo). Since I'm using a master/slave cable for my liteon, does it matter which of the 2 connections i use?

<< make sure the drive is using dma! >>

Yeah, check for that, right click on 'My computer' select properties, and look for 'Device Manger', check for the CD-ROM to see if DMA is enabled, or for XP 'If available'. Not at home to make accurate way to go through it all.

an old cable. i was under the impression that cd-rom drives didn't use ata100

and of the cable i used, it has 2 connections, i've tried both.

and should my dvd-rom drive also have DMA enabled?

well, they both had DMA enabled, and I'm still getting these problems. I just tried using Easy CD Creator and it took 8.5 min to get 75% done. what's up???

How are you copying your disks? I mean are you doing a disk to disk copy (source disk is your DVD ROM)? It will take forever if you DVD drive is not set for DMA. Also are you sure you DVD ROM can rip music fast enough to keep up with your burner?

Have you tried to copy to the Hard drive first and then burn to see if the speed is better? Do you have the latest version of Nero? The latest is 5578

well, the dvd rom might be slowing it down. this time i made an audio cd from mp3s on my hard drive and it took about 8 min. for an almost full cd. is that still slow? somehing still doesn't seem right.

and the nero version was 5.5.7.2.
i'm downloading 5.5.7.8 but i doubt it'll make such a big difference.

under device manager/hard disk controllers/via bus master pci ide controller/settings, i have a pull down "dual ide channel settings"
it is set to default, but other options are "both ide channels enabled" or one or the other or none. opinions?

Yeah, 8 min in copying from HD is way too slow for 40x burner.
It should take less than 4 min. closer to 3 min.
What is your cable length? Is it over 18"?
Seen some of manufacturers tell not to use over 18".

it's a long cable, but i'm using the closer of the 2 connectors. something is still not right. i enabled both and still 9 min or so for a less than full audio cd.

So did you connect the cdrw on the slave connector, but it's jumpered as master?
Am I right?
You should connect the drive on master when it's set as master, or if you must use slave connetor, set the jumper cable select.

i have tried it on both connectors, but the jumper settings for all my ide drives are master, since each is the only drive per cable, per ide connector.

well, i didn't really do anything different this morning, but a 75 minutes cd from mp3 took 3:30 using easy cd creator. has anyone else ever felt like their computer had to be broken in to function properly? this is the first computer i've built and it seems like it gets better (sometimes) with some age and stress. thanks for all the help guys, looks like it's alright.
