i just went to fryz and bought a 2 new maxtor 40 gb hard drive...rang for about 29.99 after rebates...one hard drive as an additional space on a previous computer and one for a new system...consisting of a celeron 700mhz, radeon 7500, and a regular sound blaster...(yea old parts)...well upon installing xp...i've been having trouble because right after the cd copies the files to the hard drive...the second part of installation keeps on restarting the computer by itself everytime...first i thought it was the hard drive problem so i went to download a utility from maxtor.com to check it out...i ran the test but it said that everything passed...the one im using as an additional drive works fine, but after a grueling partitioning process that forced me to split the drive by 20gb's and using FAT32 for it...maybe maxtor is crappy?...i don't know...can someone help me on why i can't install xp on the other one...plz thanks....

is this a legit copy of XP? if not, that could be the problem. It could be alot of things, anything overclocked?

sounds like a power issue.

Were you running a single drive previously?

Why do you call this a HD problem?? looks to me like a End User problem.

xp doesn't like old hardware. there might be something with the way the HD is interacting with the MB etc.

try installing win 2k or win 9x first.

Alot of people, including myself, already have this impression. IMHO Maxtor is total junk.

people have bad experiences with every brand -- the only documented flaw in an entire product line in recent years was the IBM 75 line and people are still saying "IBM is junk" 2 (reliable) product lines later.

You can also find people who say "never again WD!" after they got one of the special editions that went whiny, while others will chime in saying "my WDs are quiet as a library." It's hardest to find Seagate haters, but I'm sure you can if you look hard enough.

If I were Hitachi, Western Digital or Seagate I would reply back that I already do. But since I do not have a hard drive manufacturing facility in my house all I can say is ummm yeah ok. Definately one of the worst replies I have ever heard.

Seagate in the 90's had a bad line of HD's as well. I know all companies have issues with a product line now and then. But like I said through my experience with Maxtor I think they are junk. You aren't going to change my opinion since I had 4 Maxtors and all 4 are now overpriced paperweights after 6 months or less of use but they definately are quiet but that could be since they dont work.

I just got my RMA drive back from Maxtor - first time I've experienced failure too. I think I used the drive well under 6 months - maybe only 4

My drive that failed was an 80GGB - at least they sent me a 120GB as a replacement though.

It never makes up for all of the hassle and inconvenience of losing your HD and all the information inside though

Currently using Maxtor and WD HD's.

Maxtor are the only HD make i trust now.
I had a IBM drive that failed on me, 2 months after buying, and it had all my college work on it. That really pissed me off.
I used to have a Western Digital 3.2gb drive, and that had continusly degrading performance.
My fathers work used to use about 200 Fujitsu drivers, and every single one of them failed within 6 months of buying.

Back to topic. I`d say its a power issue.

I go for the cheapest. To me they all have had quality problems in the past. no one brand seems better than the next, so i'll go for the cheapest with the best performance, keep my data backed up, and RMA like h3ll if it goes bad.

btw, i used to like quantums best but they are maxtor now i guess, that was back in the day when maxtor was 2nd class. not anymore.

I have 5 western digital 7200 RPM drives and so far I've only had 2 die... i still stick with them though because they are excellent drives and have lived up to my expectations (hard hard usage)

I have 2 old quantums (both 6.4 gigs, one's a fireball and one's a bigfoot.. they both work nicely too)

I had one maxtor... it was a good drive... but slow as hell. It's in an older pc of one of my customers...

I've never had a problem with a maxtor until I broke a capacitor reinstalling my 3 year-old 40 gb maxtor 5800 drive. I got an rma and they sent me back an 80gb 7200 drive. And I just got a 160gb with an 8mb buffer for $77 including shipping and tax (after rebate and price match). So my experience has been excellent price, quality, and support. Maybe there are better drives out there, but I'm certainly not going to complain.

It doesn't make a difference what hard drive brand you have. There is no excuse for not backing up important information. Any drive could go bad at any time for a number of reasons.

Everything is legit, i tried installing xp with the same hard drive at my new computer, guess what? It Works!!! I guess it's my old computer that needs the fixing, maybe there's some compatibility issues. Im trying to find out what kind of mb i have, because I got this for free, i'll try finding an update and flashing the mb if i could...but overall thanks for your suggestions and points that all of you have given me. Thanks again!!!

Would you consider a 2x raptor raid 1 backed up to a single raptor and archived to cd (at some point) ~ "backing up"... (I hate tape)

Yes! I agree... you screw it up? You still have "important stuff" on it?... Back it up... (to anything)... I have no answers & I have no sympathy for ya... Live and learn...

(b.t.w... I've had maxtor drives fail on me in the past... But I'd still buy one today if I needed it...)

We know that drives can go bad at any time, but some brands of HD seem to be more prone to failure than others.

As for backup. Every weekend i place all of my music, save games, documents and other files onto a CDRW disk. And perminantly have them on my 20GB backup drive. I also have on the backup drive, the WinXP CD, WinXP SP1 installer, DX9 & DX9a, a archive of the last 5 sets of drivers for each of my pieces of hardware.(i have cat2.2 to 3.5, &via 4.28-4.46), any software that i use that was DLed (ZoneAlarm, AVG Anti-Virus), and any other program/games/windows updates that i may have.
I`d call that a pretty comprehensive backup routine. Wouldnt you?

And to that I will tell you that I at this moment have two maxtor hard drives older than three years old, one over a year old and two under a month old, and all work flawlessly. I will also say that I had a 1gig Seagate drive in my Pentium 1 computer and it was the biggest piece of crap I ever owned as far as hard drives go. Also, I have a Western Digital that is from that same machine and is still kicking. All of these hard drives are in currently running machines.

What am I trying to say? I'm just saying that most people have decent experiences with most products, and usually the only people who reply about certain brands are people who have had problems with them, so it's not really fair. Personally, I hate that maxtor has lowered their warranty, but that didn't stop me from buying two more of them, although if WD had 8mb cache ATA133 drives I would have bought theirs had it been the ones on sale at the time, but they don't and weren't.

Only bad experience I had with a HD was a SE WD going whiny on me. Maxtor has always worked great for me and I just recently tried Seagate, they rock! Am forced to go with a Raptor though for my OS/Games drive though since it is the fastest SATA drive atm
