Help with Raid..Please

Ok..I have an ABIT KT7A RAID...I do not want use raid for performance just for extra ide support, so to speak.

I want my CDROM(master) on IDE 1
CDRW(master) on IDE2

Now I have been reading the manual on RAID...but I not sure how to set it...here is why.

My 2 HDD are:
30gb Maxtor ata100
10gb Maxtor ata66
I want to boot from the 30gb Maxtor..so this will be my setup

IDE3..Maxtor 30gb(master)
IDE4..Maxtor 10gb(master)
Now how do I set the array...RAID 0?? or JBOD (span)
I do not want mirroring RAID1 or RAID 1+0

all want is to use the 2 HDD and the cdrom/cdrw...performance is not critical

Can you do RAID 0 with 2 different HDD???

Also..I noticed in the manual I need to install the HighPoint software to get the RAID function...if I am building the system I need to install the W98 first...can I place the HDD on IDE3 and IDE4 before the HighPoint software is installed and be able to use the HDD to Install W98?

Or Just install W98 with MAxtor on IDE1 with no hardware..install the Via 4 in 1 drivers and Highpoint software and the go back and use IDE3 and IDE4

Or should I use my other computer and just install W98 on it ? But other computer is Intel based..so I think this will screw up too many things??

Win9x must be installed on your Primary Master HDD. I dunno how RAID affects this rule.

Thanks an oh crap...so does that mean I can boot off IDE3 with W98 on this drive...bummer then I spent extra on RAID for no reason

Hi nealth, you don't have to do anything special. Just plug them all in and when you start up go into bios and change it so it'll boot of the ata100raid controller.

Remember you will only be able to array 2x the smallest drive, so you will have a 20GB raid array from your 40GB worth of HDD...its best to use two like drives if possible. Otherwise you should just use the standard IDE controllers using the 30 as primary and the 10 for storage

So...I have the Asus A7V133 MB and want to run non-Raid, I can use all controllers for ANY IDE device as long as I have it set to ATA100 ???
I'm getting mixed messages from a local tech here in Atlanta. He indicates that the Raid controllers are for HD's and cdroms, zip drives etc are unstable if you place then on the intended Raid controllers regardless of how the MB is set. PLEASE give me the straight practical application...

I just want to use IDE 3 & 4 to connect the HDD..without an array setup...is this not possible...

I want to use the 30gb as the boot device on IDE3 and 10gb on IDE4 for backup and games

So if I cannot use the RAID IDE 3 & 4...and must IDE 1 & 2 ( IDE1 30 master, 10 gb as slave) and (IDE2 cdrom master & cdrw as slave)...do I have to install the High point software???
