!!! HELP !!! XP screwed up my Radeon!!!

I recently installed XP on my comp and booted up counter-strike for because i was bored. I was expecting the 100fps i got with Windows ME. instead i got 5-10fps. Can anybody help?!?

i have:

ATI Radeon 64MB DDR
AMD Athlon T-Bird 900mhz
512 SDRAM
ASUS A7V-133
Relisys TE988 monitor

o and btw... its not in just halflife that i get low fps, its every program: ghost recon, medal of honor, etc., even old side-scrollers flicker and dont display properly.

Excuse me if this was obvious but... Did you install XP from scratch then install the XP drivers? I have heard about many problems with doing an upgrade from ME to XP.

no, i upgraded, i didn't want to lose all my programs and files. XP automatically upgraded the driver for me

lmao.........trust me xp did not upgrade your driver for you as xp doesnt have plug and play support for the radeon 8500 you have to download a new set of drivers for it and whatever you do avoid the 6011s get the 3286s. True its a little bit slower in the Nature test but the 6011s dont perform too well in some of the other tests

The ATI drivers on the XP CD are horrible. Download the new ones off of the ATI site. Make sure smoothvision is off also as well as vertical sync.

Sorry i didnt say this before, but i already had the driver off the ATI site (the new XP driver that supports OpenGL). I think i might have some seting wrong or something. is there anything that could make me have a dramatic change in fps like that?

first rule of thumb, never upgrade a MS OS

I'd say check out rageundergound and see if they got anythign to say about it.

I must agree with everyone. Upgrade's just never work right. Especially going from 9x to NT(2000/XP). I've even done NT4 to 2000 upgrades that were horrible. Clean install when changing OS's, and you will probaly notice most of your problems disapear (especially performance related ones).

i've had absolutely no problems with my 98-XP Pro upgrade.
