HELP!!!!

Hey all,
i just upgraded my girlfriends grandpa's computer.. he went from a k6-2 350 to a new tbird 800 and mobo combo.. now I'm having some problems with it.. it locks up alot.. we've gone out and purchased a new 300 watt amd approved power supply.. it's got 1 256 meg stick of that athlon only ram.. it's got one maxtor 20 gig hard drive.. 1 internal 100 meg zip drive... 1 sony cd-rw.. and 1 toshiba cd-rom.. onboard sound.. a generic motorola chipset modem.. and a v550 video card.. It's a brand new install of windows 98se with all the updates I found useful from windows update... anyone have any ideas?? it's locked up while browsing the internet and also while using microsoft works... sometimes AOHELL won't even finish saying welcome and it locks up.. thanks..
oh btw the motherboard is a pc-chips m805lr (via vt8363 based) I'm all out of ideas... and this is the first athlon based system I've built...:|

It could be the modem, try takin it out and then see if that helps. Get all the latest drivers for everything and make sure there isnt any IRQ conflicts. Pc chips motherboard? that could be your problem...

I've got all the latest drivers(including the 4-in-1's) and the latest bios update that did nothing.. I guess the next step is to try removing components one by one and running it for like 1/2 hour with them out and see if any of them have an affect..

I would be inclined to blame the motherboard. PC-Chips are quite notorious for their low quality. You did a format of the system before installing everything, right?

get a msi k7t pro or pro2 it will be rock stable and will rpobably solve your problem.

Sounds like heat. Check the fit of the heatsink. Just a guess.

could it be the ram compatibility?

Sounds like the case isn't vibrating at the right frequency. Wrap it up in towels and blankets for insulation, then plug up the air vents with electric tape. That should fix all your problems

Take out that motherboard, light it on fire, then try it all agian.

it's not a heat issue.. the motherbaord monitor says the processor never gets over 105 f... and I've got it set to shutdown if the processor reaches 135 f... I'm gonna bring it home today and try disabling the onboard sound and see if that helps.. if that doesn't help I'm gonna complain to the people we bought it from and ask them to exchange it for a better baord and we'll pay the difference..

Just because that mb is "reporting 103F" does not necessarily mean the cpu core is running that low.

I would personally just check the heatsink, just to make sure it is sitting flat on the cpu.
