I just installed my thermalright SK-7 with an 80mm sunon fan (LOUD++) and am running about 55 degrees (athlon xp 2000+ @ 1671). this seems really high.
i was getting low 60's with my stock amd hsf, and i thought this would lower it a lot more than it did. did i do something wrong?
the fan is supposed to be ~80 cfm
also, i used the generic thermal paste (is that what its called?) that came with the heatsink. will as3 make much of a difference?

There are two main things to watch out for:
  • Make sure the heatsink is on in the correct direction. On the underside, you'll notice that one end has a step cut into it. That's to provide clearance over the solid-plastic end of your CPU socket, so make sure it's not reversed by accident
  • The heatsink can slide back and forth on its clip. When you put the heatsink on, first engage the end of the clip that doesn't have the screwdriver receptacle. Now pull the heatsink as far away from the solid-plastic end of the CPU socket as the clip allows and clip down the other end of the clip. If you let the heatsink slide towards the solid-plastic end of the CPU socket, it may ride up on it (been there, done that )
AS3 would be better not only for cooling performance, but also for long life, so if you have some, it would be best to use it.

when i had a 1gHz t-bird at 1.4, that little step right took me from idle temps of 50 to idle temps of under 40 with an sk-6 plus delta black label 60mm fan. i wish that thermalright had been a little more careful with their clip design.
