I want to get a new heatsink so i can overclock higher. My current heat sink swiftech 6400-v is good, but anything past 1.475 on a sandy cpu gets too hot for my taste 52c+. And i'm using arctic silver 5. I heard of a heat sink somewhere that can keep the load temps in the high 30's to low 40's.

Any recommendations and links will do.

Ive been happy with Thermalright for 2 1/2 years.

This might suit your needs to a tee.Its a good brand too, no cheap Asian imitation.

good air cooling starts with your case. if you have a small case with bad airflow it won't matter what hsf you stick on it.

I run the A64 Freezer Pro and my load temps are about 43C when OC'ing my Venice 3000+ from 1.8 to 2.5....

Yeah but with the AC A64 Freezer Pro you dont have to deal with putting changing the HS Bracket!! A64 Freezer FTW!

If you want the mother of all heatsinks i believe the Tuniq Tower 120 is the better performer at the moment, shaving a couple of degrees off of its closest competitor.

Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro - fan blowing air sideways through HS onto exhaust fan at the back of the case
3 x SilenX case fans - 2 side intake, 1 rear exhaust - quiet(ish), powerful & colourful
Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer 5 Rev .2 - exhausts from graphics chip straight out the back of the case

Colder than a penguin's cold bits. Well nearly: CPU max = 45C (on 1.55v), GPU max = 55C, Chipset max = 33C

EDIT: Oh, and Arctic Alumina ceramic thermal compound 'cause I dont like metal based ones near to my sensitive electronic components.

anything better than a SI-120?
my opty is running quite hot at stock voltages with a SI-120 (52C-54C load)

I have a Zalman CNPS9500 and a Overclocked 3700+ @ 2.6GHz and I get 36-40 idle and 42-46 load. Which is geat since I got it at 1.45 and 400Mhz out of it.

I have an AC Freezer 64 Pro, paid 25$ for it, got an Opty (hmm in the FS section) doing 3.1 Ghz on it.

These are all great posts, but i think i found my choice. I read a review on the Scythe Ninja in a p180 case which i happen to own and the load temps were insane 26c idle, and 36c load. I think his cpu was stock, but still i found some other reviews and alot of the overclocks were pegged at around the low 40c range under load on amd's.

Its just a matter of finding it instock now.

I just got a Zalman CNPS9500 from CompUSA sale ($50), and quite disappointed. Compared to Big Typhoon, Idle temp is 3C~5C higher and load temp is 5C~10C higher. Same ambient temp, open-air testbed. Result could be different inside a case, but I don't think it'd be TOO different.

Alot of reviews i look up always come up with completely different results. I could look up a SI 120 on one site, and look on another site and get completely temps and opinions. Its making it really hard for me to decide. My swiftech MCX6400 heatsink on a stock 3700 sandy idles anywhere between 31-33c @800rpm's, and when i'm playing far cry its load is only about 38c.

Whats killing my temps when i'm overclocking is prime95. I had my cpu at 250x11 with the voltage in the bios set up as 1.475v (shows as 1.408 in cpu-z). My load temps in prime95 were 51-53c, which is too hot for my taste. Infact my computer locked up after 11hrs of running the program. The main problem was that i was getting a parasitic temperature increase, i noticed that every 2hrs or so while running prime95 that my chipset temp, and cpu temp would rise 1c. So just think what it was at while i was sleeping in the middle of the test.

This is why i wanna get a different heatsink. I do want to go phase change, but it doesn't seem that ocz is coming out with their phase change for a while yet, and i'm not spending $800+ for a vapochill or something.
