I have a 2001fp. Good all around monitor that does well for most games. No sense for you to even consider it since your card would not be a good match. Best stick with the less demanding CRTs for your purposes.

The Hyundai L90D+ seems to be the pick right now. However, I'm waiting for the Viewsonic VX924 to come out in the next few months. 4 ms response.

Brand new: Mitsu 2070/ NEC FP2141. With Sony no longer producing CRTs, these are pretty much your only choice for large CRT. But even Mitsu/NEC are getting tougher to find.

Used: Sony FW900. 24" Widescreen Trinitron and best CRT ever produced IMO. Sony G520P. Last highend 21" Trinitron Sony produced before exiting CRT biz.

2070!

Nuff said.

Doom3 is a great test coz of the dark scenes. I do like the L90D+ but 2070 looks better. and native res is lower with L90D+ at 12x10.

Samsung 710T is great....no blurring in games, only when dragging around windows and things like that. 710N is the same thing without the super rotation-stuff. Really, for $210 you can't go wrong with a 710N, even if it is LCD.

i have a 710t and i can confirm this. brighter colors do tend to blur more, for example if you're moving and in your view is a dark building and a bright sky, you can see the building ghost across the sky pretty easily, but that's the only time i notice it. the 710n also lacks dvi.

Are those FP2141s out of production or something? I really want one but the prices seem to be steadily increasing. They used to be around $550 but are over $650 now and are harder to find. I can't find one locally at all, which means I would also have to fork out another $50 for shipping costs.

The similar FE2111 is easier to find (local BB carries it), but doesn't appear to support the 2048x1536 resolution and has lower refresh rates.

I'll attest to that. I happen to have one of each and they are great to game on. HL2 at at 1920x1600 is fantastic. Not very portable, however .

Check it my monitors (and other stuff) here.

BTW: I think it sucks that Sony went out of the CRT business; they were simply the best.

Cheapest no-name CRT I could find at Office Depot. I don't see any difference using a high-quality NEC CRT or Viewsonic LCD, don't think I'd pay much for a monitor ever.

Dell 2001FP 20.1" LCD. NO ghosting whatsoever (at least ot me) in the games that I play: farcry, hl2, CS Source, UT 2004, Wow. Solid monitor all around, and chances are you can always snag a deal trhough Dell through rebates/coupons/promotions, etc. ANandtech had a very good article with the Dell 2001fp. The new widescreen model looks nice, but i dont think all games support the screen size. All in all, if your truly hardcore in gaming, you'll end up getting a crt monitor; they're still unmatched compared to the best lcd's out there. In either case, i highly recommend the dell 2001fp.

Barring cost, size, and availability, I would be willing to bet the FW900 offers the best widescreen gaming experience available. Although, I think I would opt for the 2405FPW over the FW900. I just got done moving, and weight/size have taken on an increased significance over the last few weeks.

I just picked up a refurbed NEC FP912SB (same as Mitsubishi DP930-SB) 19" CRT for $192 shipped to my door. I got the extended warranty (out to 3 years), so if you didn't get that it'd be close to $150. I don't think the monitor was ever used -- mint condition. Hell of a buy for a good 19" CRT.

LOL

CRT's are always noted by how much response it has. But I bet you you couldn't tell the difference between a CRT and LCD at 8ms running a FPS at 30fps max. If you start going into the 60fps area, then you might notice some ghosting that is actually from the LCD. 30fps produces ghosting as well or as I like to call it, "frame blurring". Same sht different smell.

Now, if only you can find a good LCD with 8-bit color reproduction to get rid of annoying shimmering.

Well I have used several larger CRT monitors in my day. I must say that the HYUNDAI 19"LCD L90D+ Blows away anything I have ever used. With a 8ms response time and a resonable price, Gotta love it!

If space and weight are not concerns - NEC/Mitsubishi FP2141SB (or perhaps that 24" Sony Widescreen CRT, although they're no longer produced). If space and weight ARE concerns...then probably 2001FP/2005FPW/2405FPW, depending on your size and aspect ratio preferences (and budget).

Just my opinion.

I agree. I've also used many large CRTs, all trinitrons by either SONY or ViewSonic, and the new LCDs are way better. I would certainly get the Hyundai L90D+ if I was buying now, although I'm extremely happy with my 16 ms BenQ. What an amazing improvement over my old SONY!
