About two weeks ago, my cable modem kept dropping its connection. Traced the problem to a bad splitter. My question is - are there high quality splitters I can purchase? Is there a brand anybody can recommend?

The problem with the splitters is usually the contacts of the connectors.

Get Gold plated splitters, and gold plated coax connectors.

Which Make?

With normal signal it does not matter.

how about bandwidth? Some of the cheaper splitters max out at a few megahertz. Look for a "wideband" or hibandwidth splitter.

Generally the cable company uses very good equipment, how about calling them to fix?

If you can find a cable guy in the neighborhood, ask them - many of them really know this stuff well and will be happy to shoot the breeze if you're friendly.

you might need an amplifier. Sometimes(maybe a lot of times, not really sure), signal coming into the house from the cable company is just strong enough to where you can connect to the internet or get a good tv signal. What happens when you use a splitter is that for every splitter you connect in series, it basically takes a bite out the strength of that signal. So, when using a splitter, the signal that comes out of it, will always be weaker than the one coming in.

A better quality splitter might not weaken it as much, but since a weaker signal simply comes with the nature of a splitter, I doubt that a better one will help much. All that being said, I'm sure that an amplifier would fix your problem, but it's probably not your only solution, and it's probably not your cheapest either. So you might want to check out radio shack, they probably have something there that would help you out.

All,

Thanks for the help.

As foshizzle suggested, I think an amplifier might be the trick. The cable is split two times before it enters my router. I guess the signal strength is too weak by then. I'll see if radio shack has anything.

I'm going to try calling the cable company for info too, but the current splitters I'm using were the ones they gave me, so I'm not sure if I'll get anything better.

If anybody else has suggestions or knows of specific brands that will be helpful, please let me know.

Thanks, again!

First off, you need a splitter with 5 to 1000mhz bandwidth, many roll off at 20-30mhz, and will kill the uplink signal.

Next, you need to put the splitter for the cable modem at the point were the cable enters the building, before any other splits. Run low loss cable from there to the cable modem.

Finally, DO NOT PUT AN AMPLIFIER in front of the cable modem! There are only a handful of them that allow bi-directional operation, and even those don't work that well as a rule. The cable system is designed to work without any amplifiers, and if it doesn't, you should fix the wiring.
