I remember there used to be unions that protected people's jobs. I wonder what happened to them.

What do H1Bs have to do with immigration?[/quote]

About the same amount that the guest worker provision in the new immigration bill does. Lots. That, and you can apply for permanent residency while you have one... as many many holders of H1B's do. Seems pretty immigration-y to me.

(well that and of course all the obvious parallels between the arguments against immigration and the arguments against H1B's)

they forgot that one simple fact and eventually the members figured that out.

Unions certainly do not help the low paid grocery workers. I have an ex-girlfriend who is in a union shop at a major grocer, I worked there myself 20 years ago. Our pay was lower than non-union grocery stores and we paid an average of 1.5 hours per week in union dues.

What we got was the opportunity to see our union rep's new mercedes and the stuff she had. Amazing the gall of these people.

What have they done to our education system? Whats happening to our automotive industry?

Yeah, we should form an IT union, and start beating up and intimidating all these Indians coming in.

Unions accelerate the problem. Just look at manufacturing. Making it even more expensive to hire domestic IT people certainly wont make anything better.

I think they were replaced by the unions that protect union officals jobs & pay, and spend their time and worker' money their perks and lobbying efforts. But's that's antedotal, based only what they do in my area.

I don't see any other way around it. I mean, are colleges are focused more on Lawyers then science and engineering degrees. Seems kids these days don't want to practice in those types of fields.... Sad but true....

Cyclic.

Colleges teach what is in demand. The lack of recruits causes a drop in demand. A oversupply causes a flood, eventually lowering the wages and overall demand. This results in an under-supply, creating a wage increase which leads to a demand in the schools.

Law Schools realize this and artificially keep the supply low; they also force the bar exams upon completion.

Medical school is the same way.

The more H1B visas we have in the USA the less demand there will be for students wanting to enter into IT or whatever other fields these H1B's are for. Then the need for technical people will go up but no one will want to train in those degree field because companies will not hire people from the USA.

So what happens is no one will go to school and the demand for trained professionals will rise even higher.

Then the average graduation level of technical professionals in the USA will drop.

This just makes College scores go down and people in the USA stupider. Is this what the aim of the Democratic party is?

Your logic skills leave a little to be desired. Why exactly would the "college score" go down if fewer people chose technical paths? What exactly is this "college score" you speak of? How exactly does that make the USA "stupider"?

Look at the percentage of foreign students in US engineering/science graduate schools compared to domestic students. It's quite high. Each grad school pumps out a small amount of MS and PhDs a year. There's an obvious shortage of citizens in highly technical fields.

That is one idiotic logic you have there
Judging by your post, I see their aim is already working on you.

Hehehe, as blue collar workers unions were destroyed so too will white collar workers die. There are millions of people in China and India who can and will do your jobs and you too will be out in the cold. And the last thing you want to do is unionize. My Pa always said people are stuck with the bed they make.

I think a lot of these companies get around H1B limits by grabbing as many H1B's as they can directly, and then going to consulting firms and contracting with them for more.

There should be a US government website where this information is available, and you can see how many H1B's a company has.

You are absolutely right. The 9 Indian outsourcing companies like Infosys, Tata consulting accounted for 20,000 of the 65,000 H1B visa available this year (used up the first day they became available). Those companies applied H1B visa for their Indian employees that maybe assigned to the US for 1, 2 or 3 years. Those Indian IT workers usually gets lower salary compared to the US worker, and they are short term solutions to the American IT shortage.

Unlike those outsourcing companies, many large technology companies like Microsoft, Google and others hires foreign students who graduated from US engineering/CS schools using H1B visa. Most of those students eventually becomes permanent resident or US citizen. They are highly trained and highly paid. And they follow the legal immigration process.

Instead of blindly giving out more H1B's, politicians need to figure out how companies are using H1B and prevent companies mis-using those H1B visas.

Unionizing will only compound the problem. What are we going to do...threaten to strike if they are about to ship our jobs overseas? Beat up all the Indians in the office? Making us even more difficult to work with will make the cheap Indians look even more desireable. Unions only work to a members benefit if there are no non-union alternatives. Old school unions made sure there were no non-union alternatives by some pretty underhanded, and often violent methods.

I don't think my contractors are worth the money we pay them, which is a lot by the area's standards. They have no sense of quality or long term commitment - I need to watch them like a hawk to make sure what they make isn't junk.
