Alright so currently have an aging AMD 3700+ (Single core oh noes!), 1gb Micron xp4000+, Sapphire x850xt, two 74gb raptors in raid0, pcp&c 510 turbo-cool deluxe, stuffed into a Thermaltake Armor case. Currently running Windows XP Home. Displayed on a Dell 2005 FPW at 1680x1050

New Rig-
Core2 Duo 6420 or 6600
Abit QuadGT or MSI P6N Plat
2gb Micron D9
WD 320gb SATAII, perhaps a second of the same Model
Onboard sound for now
Re-use the Thermaltake Armor
Re-use the Dell 2005 FPW at 1680x1050
Perhaps Re-use the PCP&C 510 (Will it hold up and be somewhat future-proof?)
Video Card- Going to see what happens after the NDA is lifted on the R600 with pricing. Minimum of a 8800 GTS 320mb and just upgrade with the fall/winter refresh.
Windows Vista Ultimate
Probably Dual Boot with XP Home until some of the Vista Issues are resolved
Throw a Ultra 120 with a nice fan and get some nice clocks out of it and call it a day.

Seem reasonable for a gaming/everyday PC?

Your old system isn't exactly horrible for gaming, bump the cpu and another gig of ram.

Anyway, your new setup should be fine. I wonder about the difference between your raptors and the SATA 3Gb/s for gaming. By the way, I was just looking at the Abit board you posted and read up about this. I'd like to find some comparisons somewhere, but after about 5 minutes of searching didn't find anything.

The cpu should be fine, with 2gb of RAM (I prefer Corsair/OCZ)...not sure what the Micron D9 is? Anyway, had to look it up and found this.

You can bet the R600 will be the same price or more as the model number (600). I just got a 8800 GTS 640mb and it's pretty solid, running Oblivion Highest settings including full AA/AF and HDR all at 1900x1200 res.

Looks good, I bought a e6420 recently and looks like they OC well. I have a L49G stepping, havent got a chance to test it but from what I've read most people have had good sucess, but it has been hit or miss depending on the stepping/week etc.

Yea trying to decide if it is worth it to step up with the 6600 since it seems the 6420 OC's just as well, just figured since some places include Supreme Commander and I don't have it yet... that it might be worth the extra bit since you basically get it at no additional cost.

As far as the SATAII, I was referring to the 3gb/s drives. The raptors should be faster, but I just am tired of the noise and WD is supposed to have some of the quietest 7200rpm drives around so I'm leaning towards that. I prefer Micron/OCZ/Corsair so any of those are fine. Micron D9 is the memory chips utilized on certain sets of ddr2 ram and appears to be the best OC'ing ICs of the bunch currently. The R600 will probably not be 600+ unless it actually competes with or betters the 8800 GTX, but from the supposively leaked benchmarks it looks like it will be around the 500 and under price point. Hoping it does as well or better than the GTX though as that will bring prices down. Ahh well, we'll see.

My current rig runs the games I like, but I just can't run them above medium settings for most. Would like to enjoy some eye candy and move up to Dual Core. Will probably get a corsair 520, different case and give this comp to my dad with my extra monitor/kb/mouse. He needs something newer than what he has.

I just never knew about the SATA II misnomer and was just passing it along, I figured you mean 3gb/s. I really haven't had much noise from my stripe raptors, but I watercool them so maybe that helps?

I've yet to join the DDR2 group, I'm still on the 939 socket and just recently upgraded from an FX55 to an Opteron 185. At the same time I went from an x850xt to 8800 GTS 640mb.

I only said the R600 would be 600 plus was because of nvidia's recent news release of their new "ultra". I figured they knew something we didn't, but I have read conflicting info on whether it will beat out the GTX or not...so the price will depend on that.

I send all my old rigs to my relatives as well...the bad thing is...I become their tech support
