Well, I was told it would work several years ago, I tried it and it did not work for me. What resolution were you able to send from your comptuer with a VGA to Component cable?

I want to go 5.1, but my mom's being cheap. We're spending about $15k finishing our basement with full bath, and she won't even let me go above $500 for speakers -_-;

If you're on a budget, get the front three or just the L/R for now and then get the others as you can afford them. Speakers will last a long time.

By the way, if you can really get stuff at BB for only a little above cost, I think that's the way to go because retail markups are pretty high so the corresponding wholesale discount would be pretty high as well.

Just an example: the sony STR-DG800 was being sold for $280 at Amazon last week but is $400 at bestbuy. Amazon is probably selling for ~%20 above wholesale so you see the discount would be pretty big at BB if you could get wholesale prices.

Oh yeah, I have one more question. Can you mount bookshelf speakers, or are those too heavy? I wouldn't want a bunch of wires running along my floor from my rears.

Yes you can wall-mount bookshelf speakers. However, if they are rear-ported make sure you get a wall mount that keeps them far enough away from the wall.

Hmm, could I possibly mount them on the ceiling? I'm probably going to have a corner couch that leaves some room between the edge and the right side for walking. If I mounted them on the opposite walls, would the different distances from the couch be problematic?

Provided that one is not rediculously close...the receiver will take care of that

My mom realized that it wouldn't make much sense to buy rear speakers later, since the contractor could do all the drilling and mounting at the same time as finishing the basement. So she decided to bump the budget up to $1000.

I think the Infinity Primus series would be a stronger choice for you than the original speakers.

They have some pretty good deals at Vanns.
example:
http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/bundle/542199665/1149885208581

EDIT: CC has some nice deals too (looks like some rebates end tonight though...)
Primus 250s are $149 - $50MIR = $99 each
C25 is $99
Primus 150s are $70 - $30MIR = $40 each

So, AR you're looking at a decent 5.0 system with towers up front for $380

Add in a $200-$300 receiver

and you've got $300-ish left over for a sub.

Wow, that's a nice deal. I think I'll go for it. Free shipping is awesome too. Since I'll have some money left over, should I get a better receiver? Or will the Pioneer be good enough?

What speaker mountes should I get? These speakers are pretty heavy. I'll need mounts that support up to 20 lbs. What about an A/V rack? What's a cheap rack I can use to hold a receiver, DVD player, VCR, Xbox, and my center?
