Collected a shit-ton of hops last night off of the vine (Cascade variety). I ended up with about 1/2 grocery bag full, not sure of the weight, probably about a 1 pound.

Here are some pictars:

I'm drying them out now (in the attic) and plan to brew with them as flavor and aroma additions this Saturday or Sunday.

Those hops look yummy, what type of beer are you going to be brewing with them?

Wow, they look like Artichokes (sp?). I never knew what "hops" looked like...I just drink them. Good luck w/your Fall 2008 Batch.
On another note, you have a beautiful family. Three smiley, happy kids...good stuff.

I've had st arnolds but not their wheat. I'm actually adverse towards wheat beers with the exception being Bell's Oberon in small quantities.

Where is St Arnold's brewed again?

Nice. How long after you planted did you start collecting? I've thought about growing some hops but most of the beers I brew are low IBUs so I don't really use too much. You have any other kind planted?

I pulled off hops the first year, but not very many. This year I got about 3 x's what I had last year, which I'm guessing will be enough for 3 - 4 batches.

It's brewed here in Houston ... Here's their beers: http://www.saintarnold.com/beers/

My Favs are: Texas Wheat, Oktoberfest and Winter Stout ... their Divine's are nice, but typically around $12-18 a six pack and in VERY limited release. I still have 4 of the No 5's and a good amount of No 6's left.

I want to brew my own!

I don't think I really have the space to do it, I have no hop plants, and no brewer supply place to get hops or yeast or any of that.
Anywhom, how did you learn to do this? Brewing websites?

<--Jealous.

some pals and I brewed some styles several years back on the cheap; the 'ol five-gallon bucket and glass carboy way. Never had the cash or time to invest in something serious. I would LOVE to grow my own hops though. The stuff you buy at brew supply stores is just too expensive and too low in quantity to be of any use.

You know, I have always wondered how much a shit-ton was, exactly. I'm rather surprised to learn it's not a measure of mass, but volume, and that it's half a grocery bag.

I'll file this away with the definition of bulk and its auto part equivalency.
