we have state farm for auto/home etc. i believe they are expensive but since i don't take care of the bills i can't tell you how much.

it doesn't really matter because once you make a significant claim they try to drop you anyway.

try getting it through whoever you have other insurance policies with. i keep all of mine with NC Farm Bureau because the agent is a family friend and makes *any* dealings with the company easy. FB gives discounts if you have multiple policies with them (i had home, life, and auto)

My in-laws have been with State Farm for 30 years with no problems. I've been with State Farm for 7 years and have found their rates suprisingly low.

I have auto, homeowners and life insurance with USAA. In fact, we financed my wife's car through them as well. Great company but you must be military or family of military to qualify. My Father-In-Law was an Officer in the Air Force so that is how I came to be insured by them.

Have you made any claims though in your 7 years with them?

We moved ours to Shelter insurance.

Allstate wanted to raise ours to $1800, we had never filed a claim in almost 10 years.

Shelter insured us for $1100, with a slightly lower deductible.

My father got a sweet deal by moving his car and house to Shelter. Basically getting free car insurance and saving 40% on homeowners compared to what he was paying before.

No homeowner's claims. On the auto side I've had two accidents-- one with $3,000 in damages, and the other with $45,000 in damages. In both cases I had a check the same day the adjust declared the vehicles a total loss.

My father in law has had more accidents than I care to remember, as well as a few small howeowners claims, with no neglible effect.

USAA is great. Unfortunately, they said they don't do homeowners in my area.

I have Amica...rated highest in Customer Service like 5 years in a row or something like that and I would absolutely recommend them. No bs call the 800 #, push 1 for this, push 2 for this and have to figure out how the hell to talk to someone. When you call you get a live person and tell them 'I need to talk to someone about my existing home policy' or whatever. Haven't had to make a claim on my homeowners but was in an accident a couple years ago and they were great. I know w their auto insurance you can opt for a plan that say costs you $1000/yr or one that costs you $1050/yr and you get $100 back if you don't make a claim or something like that. I think they offer similar for home as well.

800-24-AMICA or amica.com

I'm having a good experience with Liberty Mutual. Currently I have one car, homeowners for my primary residence, and condo insurance for my tenant-occupied rental through them. Plus I get a group discount through work and there's a rep who makes regular trips to the office for our insurance-related errand-running convenience. I'm never going to the DMV again.

look for a local agent... I personally have Allstate and have been very happy with them.
anyways, get a few quotes from local agents in your area. Go in and talk with them about coverages you want/need. Not all home insurance policies are created equal.
Make sure to get REPLACEMENT COST on dwelling and contents.

Its really important to review your coverage on a regular basis to make sure that you have enough coverage to replace/rebuild your home. Some companies have guaranteed replacement or extended replacement coverage. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or need help.

Thanks

Most posts in this thread talk price.. you get what you pay for. For home State Farm / Allstate can be good (canceled of 300,000 people in FL over the last few years).. So, SF.

Rates are competitive too! Service is the best in the industry. SF won JD Powers award for claims service with autos.

Why add another layer to the mix with a local agent? Usually their goal is sales and profit, not your best interest. In this day and age there's no reason to use a local agent.

Buzzzz..... wrong answer An agent can be very useful if you don't just need "basic coverage" for your car or something like that. Most of us are simply not schooled in the intricacies of the insurance business to know where the rubs are in a policy and what you need to look for. Find an agent you trust, and they can match you up with the right policy to meet your needs so you don't find out that you're screwed after something happens. Well worth the money. Even if you don't know an agent you trust, visit with a few of them and hear them out, then compare notes.

Of course if you just want basic or minimum coverage, then it's not worth your time to do that kind of research... but if you really want to protect your home/family and everything you've worked for, it's worth it. And no, I'm not an insurance agent.

I pay $2300/year for 150k coverage in New Orleans for a house that only suffered a blown down fence during Katrina with AAA (no better options available, not enough companies writing policies down here) :|

because agents can get you discounts that you will not be given direct. Also, it is much simpler to call your agent and have him do all the work when filing a claim.

Where do you live?

We have Erie Insurance, but it doesn't offer coverage in every state. So far have good rates and service, BUT (yes a big but) haven't filed a claim in over 3 yr.
