Do you have to give a CC number for the "free" trial then?

I dont believe you do. They have free accounts because some cd's are free. There is a free aphex twin one I believe.

I've never really paid attention to this site until now, but if they are selling music without a license, you might as well use Kazaa insted of paying them.

Becuase of that I did a little research:
http://www.pcworld.com/reviews...le/0,aid,118273,00.asp
http://www.digitmag.co.uk/feat...dex.cfm?FeatureID=1177
but its licenses are based on Russian copyright laws, so its content may be illegal for users outside of that country.

I suppose the bottom line is, draw your own conclusion.

First let me predicate the following remarks by the following: There isn't much difference between AllOfMP3 and downloading from your favorite free service except that AllOfMP3 makes it a bit simpler and perhaps offers more choices at all times. But the artists are still taking it up the down side when you "buy" from AllOfMP3. The only ones making anything are the, er, "businessmen" at AllOfMP3.

OK, let's say that doesn't bug you (YMMV). Then the following is true:

They used to have a good deal: $10 (or something like that) a month for up to 1000 songs at up to 128kbps encoding. Slow download rate, but OK if you used a download manager.

Then they went to a cost per mb only basis and they're hardly that hot a deal anymore.

Kwad

To each his own. I enjoy the selection of music and the sound quality at this site is superior to anywhere period. Plus the fact that I can get multuple cd's in very high quility for under a dollarl makes it worth it to me. And I have yet to see an article proving its illeagel. They pay the russian music tax and are going by all the guidelines of there country. I havent recieved any emails from the RIAA and neither have any other users. So until you can prove what they are doing is illegal stay the fvck away from my threads with your thread crapping.

Hey, if the ethics don't bother you, then what you're saying is you'd rather pay AllOfMP3 than get them free. Uh, OK. (You said you got multiple CDs for a buck, which indicates you're downloading in "about as good as listening over the phone" quality--the same kind of quality you can easily find elsewhere).

I don't know if that makes you a philanthropist or an idiot. Though given your inability to actually understand the essence of what I originally wrote tends to slant the table in a certain direction, if you know what I mean. Which maybe you don't.

Kwad

The truth is most artist only get about $.50 to $.75 per CD that is purchased in a store here in the U.S. The rest of that money is going to the record label and the store that you purchased the CD at. Then that artist must "pay back" an advance that the record label gives them to record the album. Artists must rely on merchandise and ticket sales to make any money. ( I was a rock mechandise manager for 5 years, I've seen the numbers). So, who is robbing who?

OMG I am LOVING THIS SITE!! I can see why people would be concerned about it's legality... big gray area!! I don't see how it's different from me going to mexico to buy drugs or alcohol. their laws allow me to do so... I have to pay tax when bringing them in though, but I don't think current tax laws would be able to stop this site (though I am an ignorant s.o.b so I don't really know)

I can't wait to see the RIAA try to fight this one

RIAA: Juuuuuudge!! We're loosing MONEY!!!
Judge: Well, there's nothing the law can do to stop them. Sorry
RIAA: but what do WE do?!
Judge: Maybe you should stop being so greedy and lower your prices
RIAA: <GASP!!!>
America: WOO-HOO!

Allofmp3.com sucks.. I tried depositing and when it was done, i got this reply
Dear user xxxxx!

Unfortunately for successful payment fulfillment, Cyberplat.com,
our payment system, requests additional data, in this connection
I would ask you to send the name of the bank that issued the card
you used to effect the payment to the address admin@allofmp3.com
or to allofmp3.com Technical Support service. Until we receive you
reply your account will be suspended.

We are sorry for inconvenience it caused.

Best regards,
Allofmp3.com administration, admin@allofmp3.com

Then when i sent them the issuing bank details I got this:
All your future payments will be stopped also an account is blocked. For the decision of the given difficulty you can register card in CyberPlat:
http://www.cyberplat.com/cyberplatpay/cyberplatpay.htm

Why would you use your ACTUAL card? I mean I like all of mp3 and they havent ripped me off but seriously I don't trust any company out of the country with my real credit card.

Allofmp3 is the best, it's the only place selling lossless or full .wav files online and they actually have customer support and the works. They are everything that itunes should have been. They get my business because they deliver. I'm sick and tired of stupid local companies trying to charge me $1 for a stupid compressed new release song available on every P2P network around.

Justify it however you want, but someone produces a product (music in this case), and it costs them money to do it. Unless they decide for themselves to give it away, getting it for free (or through a black market that doesn't reimburse the maker) is stealing. I don't see how it's any different than stealing cable. You can justify it the same way, "I wouldn't use it otherwise, it doesn't really cost anybody anything, it gives it more exposure." But just because you can do something and get away with it doesn't mean it's right.

I'm no advocate for the music business or musicians, but they've got rights, just like anyone else that creates intellectual property (would you feel different if they were selling games, movies or programs?). It may be a grey area legally, and maybe there are loopholes, but being "technically legal" and "right" are two completely different things.

Pony up the money and buy the CD or use a legit service. If you don't like it, boycott, write letters, have a naked sit-in, but don't steal because "the labels rip off the artists", or "the artist is rich anyway". Character is doing the right thing when no one is looking.

you know, its sort of funny. All these record conglomerates complain about "losing" money to piracy, but if you look at their annual earning, each company is up. For instance, current figures released by BMI show anything but a drop. This year alone, they have gain a record earning of $673 million and an average yearly growth of 9%. Ironically, file-sharing is on the rise.

So the next time the RIAA tells you that they are "losing" money, what they are talking about is likely the projected profits compared to what they are use to earning.

As for the legality of this program, by U.S. copyright laws, this is illegal. By Russian laws, this is probably legal though.

WIRED reviewed them for their yearly product test issue;I believe it came out in November. Anyway, they got 4/5.

They state that is its cheap and easy to use, but also mention that artists probably get nothing.
