Hey guys...Its 3AM CST and I'm at home for the holidays bored as heck...but something has been bugging me and I must get this off my chest!

My XP 1600+ is one hot MOFO!!!

before I go on...some stats on my PC

Lian Li PC 6083a w/ panaflo L1as all round. (I added two side panel fans with a new acrylic window from PC mods)
XP 1600+ AROIRA or whatever it is.
ALPHA 8045 w/ a sunon 28dBa/36Cfm 80mm fan
2x 256 PC2100 Crucial RAM w/ Thermaltake heat spreaders
Visiontek GF4 Ti4200 128MB
Philips Acoustic Edge Sound card
Netgear NIC
Leadtek Winfast TV tuner
80GB 7200RPM WD HD
Liteon 16x DVDROM
Liteon 48X burner
Antec 480W Truepower PSU

running on Windows XP

using optimal RAM settings...

*phew* i think thats everything.

Anyways... My system runs extremely hot. Even at default. I'm getting 31C case temp and 52C CPU temp. Thats a 21C difference.

I had it OCed to 166FSB for a while till I got the Leadtek but when I put that puppy in it wouldn't post so I had to drop my FSB down to 150 to allow it to run stable.

But now, even at 150 sometimes it reboots, I disabled auto reboot and now I see some physical memory dumps! I don't think its bad ram since I threw my ram into my roomates computer and it runs fine. So could the CPU be dying? I'm very tempted to just dump the CPU on EBAY and buy a new one from newegg.

Another option is to dump the Alpha and get the SLK800?

what do you guys suggest?

That HS should be more the adequate... 31c case temp seems a tiny bit high to me. Mine is 27 currently. but I do have good ventalation. Is the HSF properly attacked? did you use a good application of thermal compound? (you dont have to use alot remember)

52C seems a bit hot if its running at stock. Whats your voltage?

If you decide to sell send me a PM I could make you an offer. Hopefully there isnt somet hing wrong with it thoug.

You forgot to mention the thing that makes more difference than even the heatsink: the motherboard you're using. The same CPU will read 40C on one board, 70C on another, and the real temperature is the same. Do you happen to have an EPoX 8KHA-family or Gigabyte 7VRX 2.0? Both of them read from the on-CPU thermistor and can be expected to give realistic (hot) temperatures. The A7V333 is known for reading realistic (hot) temperatures too, with its earlier BIOS revisions anyway.

Oops! I forgot to mention my motherboard! *DURH* It's an A-bit KR7A-RAID..I honestly dont think theres anything wrong with the chip...I just dont like how hot it's running. I *supposedly* have good air circulation...at least I hope so.

Oh yeah, and I used Arctic Silver 3...I didnt put too much...I fiddle around with these so I'm pretty positive I didn't overload it.

Like Mechbgon said: it can really depend on the mother board.
You can't really compare your temp to what other people report unless they have the same
mother board and bios revision.
I have a (ehem) A7A266 with a 1.33 Ghz Tbird that seemed to be running hot (60 dC) so I changed my
stock HSF to a Swiftech MCX370 and a screamin delta, put in some case fans and voila - cpu temp dropped
about 18 degrees.

I then proceeded to upgrade my BIOS and my temps jumped around 8 C to 50 C.
Aparently ASUS decided to offset the temp reading believing that it would compensate for the thermistor
placement under the CPU. (They're probably right)

Nice case BTW. How do you open the drives with the buttons covered over?

Yeah I thought that too...but here's the catch...

Prior to this computer... I had another 1600+ in a generic case that ran at about 41 idle...same mobo...then I switched cases to teh Lian Li and also got a newer stepping 1600+

So basically the heat can only be either the chip or the new case...though the case temps seem similar to the generic case temps...which leads me tot hink its the chip.

As for my case...thanks! I used to use a program called CD Eject 2000 which would bind a key to eject...it was somewhat laggy but made it like those iMacs...I just put a piece of double sided tape on the back of the metal panel the sits right in front of the eject button...so when I tap the metal panel the "stub" of tape hits the eject and opens it.

I'm currently OCing my system...

158*10.5 = 1662Mhz

I'm Prime95 torture testing my computer and it's fine no errors but temps are around 64C

I think it's the low cfm fan I'm using...whats the most efficient quiet fan out there? I don't think this 38cfm is doing any good.
