Okay, let's clear up some facts here about the free services. I do have inboxes with all 3 (Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo) so I'm not biases towards any particular one. I just keep reading the same rants, complaints, etc every so often I figured I'd reply now.

Inbox space is becoming like Horsepower in cars. Who really needs a 400hp 4-door sedan? There is a race to supply the biggest inboxes even though most people don't need that much space. Com'on, 1GB? Even 250MB is huge. Most normal users don't need 1GB of storage, and no, we aren't "normal" users

Fact: Hotmail's spam guard has been evolving and is much better than it was before. People that say it "sucks" and always has sucked are fooling themselves. The spam detection has gotten much, much better in last 6-12 months, there has been decrease of spam by about 25%-50% in my inbox.

Fact: Microsoft is a target for spammers since there are so many users compared to the other services. I think I read that Hotmail has over 200 milliion users. People, this means that spammers will target Hotmail over other email providers. Why? They can brute force email addresses via scripts and get the biggest bang for their buck. Why try to spam another email provider (eg. Yahoo) that has a fraction of the users? This is why you guys are getting so much spam.. Look at this example: Suppose that 10% of users get 1 spam message. 10% of Hotmail's 200+ million users is far greater than 10% of Yahoo's users (I think it's <50 million). Percentage wise, I'm betting that Hotmail is on par with other providers.

No one has mentioned Gmail's privacy antics with the fact that ads are targetted based on yoru email content and that they archive all your mail even mails that you have explicitly deleted. i remember people jumping all over Yahoo awhile back about some privacy violations, but those were insignificant compared to what Google is trying to pull.

Last thing is that after using gmail for about 2 months, their UI is horrible. Sure there are no huge banner ads on gmail (i love this), their UI is actually really cluttered and at times unusable. I feel like I"m part of this huge usability study where they are trying to work out their kinks. Definitely not ready for prime time at all. Yahoo and Hotmail whoop google's butt here.

Food for thought.

It's been proven that most free providers archive their mail, Google is just an enough to let the users know. Also, you failed to mention that Google is balls to the wall faster than yahoo or hotmail.

Completely disagree with you. Show me proof that Yahoo or Hotmail keeps your mail even after you delete it for an unspecified amount of time.

It's reasonle to expect that email isn't deleted immediately, it may take some time for the deletion to propagate throughout all their servers. (i'm assuming they are backing up our mail ).

I could be wrong on this point for another reason though.. perhaps Gmail changed it's "no delete" policy. I haven't kept up to date on this specific issue.

Side note, gotta love google's nomination in the "Big Brother award": http://www.google-watch.org/bigbro.html

Its about time they do that. The pathetic 2MB storage can do nuts these days.
A decent attachment can take up to over 50% of my storage space.

Which is when I found using a USB Flash drive being more practical then e-mail at college.

Yahoo has been doing great.

Later this summer, MSN will begin increasing storage limits for free MSN Hotmail accounts in multiple markets around the world. Customers will receive 125 times their current e mail storage with the introduction of 250MB inboxes and have the ability to send attachments up to 10 MB. Upon upgrade, MSN Hotmail customers will also receive MSN Calendar free, enabling both individual and shared calendaring

hotmail storage and attachement limits

Hotmail also deletes sent mail after 30 days. And Google is so darn fast, it seems faster than opening mail in OE I just use my Roadrunner mail as my primary, but gmail sounds really interesting, especially for the conversation view.

Don't forget - the 2GB @ hotmail will be ad-free Double gmail's storage, no ads, and (at least in my experience), faster sending/receiving. I think I'll keep my hotmail now!

has anyone noticed that after MSN buys a web site the quality just goes down the tube. There are numerous service I used to enjoy using but just hate them now with MSN's interface.

Mapblast.
hotmail.
there was a nice price comparison site.

now I hate using mapblasts interface, hate hotmail for a variety of reasons (ie 2MB, 30days crap, attachment limit).

bmacd: Dude - if it's because you're saving emails on there, you might want to just d/l it off w/ Outlook. That's what I do probably about once a month. Although now the transfer might be posted to once every half year w/ the 250mb.

haha, i still don't believe Google will survive once they open up the gmail to free accounts--1 gb per account, people can easily sign up for multiple accounts for no reason.. that's gonna be millions of gb each and every day at their expense. hotmail and yahoo give space that's a bit more reasonable--4 to 5 times less, so they can survive much longer. if gmail was a hoax, it was a good one...
