<< When I was doin it we always used to joke that at 20 minutes after the hour it was 4:20 SOMEWHERE in the world (even if it was in the middle of the pacific) so we'd always wait that extra few minutes and hit it right on 20 after the hour.

4/20 - bday of the first person to smoke pot

I'd be extremely currious to see how they could find this out, seeing as people have been smoking pot for thousands of years

wow, there is a lot of misinformation in this thread. Sure can tell that most of you know absolutely nothing about marijuana besides what you hear from someone else.

I am celebrating 420 by quitting smoking . . . those Hawaiian varieties are hard on respiration (and energy). I no longer have any reason for painkillers as 3 months of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Hawaii fixed my accident problems . . .

BTW, I lived in San Rafael in 1974-77. . . I DO remember 420 used by my Marin County contemporaries. (long-term memory is still good . . . however, what were we just talking about? . . . )

although I would doubt the validity of that study, I would rather have my brain cells distorted than dead(although I drink too so....)

Here:

<< Long-term use of marijuana produces changes in the brain that are similar to those seen after long-term use of other major drugs of abuse such as cocaine, heroin, and alcohol. Moreover, these changes may increase a user's vulnerability to addiction to other abusable drugs by "priming" the brain to be more easily changed by drugs in the future. This study is published in the June 27 issue of Science.
"We know that a substantial number of chronic marijuana users become addicted, and previous research with animals has shown that stopping heavy marijuana use suddenly can cause distinct withdrawal symptoms," said Dr. Alan I. Leshner, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institutes of Health, which supported this research. "This study shows that marijuana use shares common brain changes and mechanisms with other drugs of abuse."

This study was conducted by scientists in the United States and Spain to discover whether CRF (corticotropin-releasing factor), a brain chemical which increases during emotional times and periods of stress, plays a role in dependence on cannabis, the plant from which marijuana and hashish are derived. Earlier studies have suggested that CRF plays a role in the neurobiological and behavioral effects of withdrawal from addiction to cocaine, alcohol, and opiates, and possibly a role in drug dependence in general.

Dispute the study if you want, but forgive me if I trust the NIH's opinion more than yours.

For the record, before any of you accuse me of being anti-drug, etc. I have smoked before. It's rather enjoyable. I won't, however, let it destroy my life as it has to several of my friends, and a few family members. It has, in my family and my experiences, been worse on a percentage basis than alcohol.

Sweet. Since there haven't been any new studies since 1997, right?
Head to erowid.org and educate please.

I didn't say that there haven't been. Drop the condescension, please. I fail to see anything more recent on the site you quoted, looking briefly (since I don't have much time right now), that runs counter to the NIH study. There are indications (many in more recent medical studies; I'll look for them, if you don't want to) that marijuana does have long-term effects on brain functionality. This does not claim brain damage, or that it is killing brain cells; rather, that there are certain functions (I believe there were considerations of dopamine and possibly seratonin receptor concerns) associated with long-term use of marijuana.

I've done alot of research on Marijuana cause i have been tempted to try it but have always refrained. I never really had a reason and still really dont other then i just dont want to which is good enough for me. Getting to my point, the best site i have found which i believe to be the msot Unbias and likely to give me the correct information has been Erowid. I checked the myths and the facts and from what i have seen and what i have taken as factual information Weed does not kill brain cells. Obviously it will alter your state of mind being a Mind-Altering Drug, other then the smoke aspect and breathing it in your lungs and jacking them up ( but on a far less scale then Tobacco) it seems to be better for you then both alcohol and and Tobacco.

just my $.02
