There's a thread in the apple sub forum here.

Looks like an annoying but not serious problem.

In the comments some guy says he doesn't have that problem with his iPhone 5. I smell some defective iPhone 5 batches.

"You're holding it wrong". Wasn't that the same solution for the iPhone 4's antennae issue too?

Sounds like a setup for a joke. "The iPhone 5's camera is so bad that...."

sorry, i didnt know we have a forum dedicated to just apple stuff

No need to apologise, I hope that I didn't come over as having a go at you.

That forum is well hidden in the software section for some reason.

I suggest you listen to this week's AnandTech podcast. Here's a link: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6345/the-anandtech-podcast-episode-7

Yeah, basically he says it's stray light causing glare. Doesn't happen that often, and it doesn't happen any more on the iPhone 5 really than other phones.

I'm not an iPhone user/fan or anything, and I don't really see what the big fuss is. I think after every release people are just looking for something to be wrong with the phone (the Apple Maps issues are legit, though).

Interesting, since I've yet to see this happen with my N8. The closest I've witnessed is a prismatic flare, and that was due to direct exposure to a strong light source (the sun).

Well, you have to keep in mind that the majority of cameras will be susceptible to lens flares. The "big fuss" is that unlike most cameras, the iPhone 5's lens flares almost always have a purple hue to them. In most cases, lens flares on other devices will just be white, which is fairly normal. I've taken shots using the iPhone 5, iPad 2 and ASUS TF300, and it's ridiculously easy to get purple flares on my iPhone 5. However, it's rather difficult to get any purple hazing on the other two devices. So far, I've only been able to get slight pink hazing on the TF300.

Now, you'll have to excuse my poor photo compilation skills, but these shots that I took earlier should give you an idea:

If you look, there is some slight pink hazing at the top of the right TF300 photo.

Oh, and if you want to read more, the issue was first brought to light (pun intended) on these forums. So, if you want to read more and see some interesting photos including a panorama shot with purple flare within the image, check out the Apple sub-forum thread.

EDIT:

Oh and in case you're wondering, the left set of images are taken pointing at the ASUS VG278H monitor that you see in the right set of photos. The lens flare is caused by my Dell U2709W monitor that's off-screen in both photos. These were all taken with the overhead lights on (the ones that I used for the flare in the right photos), but it would definitely be more pronounced with the lights off.

It is a valid problem but if you take pictures while actually looking on the phone screen you can avoid it because the flare shows up before you take the picture. The main problem is that while other cameras still show a flare it's usually in a white color and when you take the same photo on the iPhone 5 the flare is a purple color.

If your one of those artsy guys that tries to actually intentionally capture the flare I would suggest another phone like the S3 or One X but 99% of the people this shouldn't be a problem and is easily avoidable. In my tests if you literally move like 2mm for the original point of the shot the flare goes away.

If you're one of those artsy guys that's trying that hard to take decent pics, you shouldn't be using a phone for it anyway.

You shouldn't be using an iphone. There are other phones which take decent pics. And yes, I expect a phone to take decent pics.

Phones still aren't even close to an actual camera. Further even from SLRs. This is especially evident in pow light situations.

I know phones are no match for a DSLR, I have one. But in many situations, I don't feel like dragging a DSLR around and I still want decent photos. Not large print quality material, but something that's good enough so when I look at the photo, the first thing I notice are not the horribly blown out highlights and the mosaic noisefest shadows.

Yup, the best camera is the one you have. Unless, apparently, you have an iP5
