edit: you guys really are lame...and i mean really lame. i swear this forum has the most uptight bastards. "if you cant find it in you, do you really mean it?" umm wtf?! so dont EVER abbreviate LOL because if you cant type it all out, you dont really think its funny

thanks is short, yes, but does it really hurt your feelings if you are typing in a game for example and someone says "thx" instead of "thanks" or "thank you?" hmm if you answered yes, you should go kill yourself because you are basically a waste of good resources, like toiletpaper. other people that dont have a broken plunger in their ass can be using the toiletpaper that you are using.

Thanks IS an abbreviation...it's short for "thank you very much," or even simply "thank you." It cannot be shortened without sounding moronic.
