Why do gays, lesbians, and the other "non-traditional" sexual oriented folks have so many mental problems?
It seems like MOST are on some kind of drug for whatever psychosis they have. I don't begin to know all of the mental defects, bi-polar, autism, aspergers, etc., but it seems like the GLBT community is awash in those kinds of mental problems.
What ever happened to "Gay" meaning "happy?"
(very few gay people seem to be "happy."
Several studies suggest that gay men, lesbians and bisexuals appear to have higher rates of some mental disorders compared with heterosexuals, although not to the level of a serious pathology. Discrimination may help fuel these higher rates.A study found lesbians reported equally strong levels of mental health as their heterosexual sisters and higher self-esteem.A new study of gay and lesbian youth finds that they are only slightly more likely than heterosexual youth to attempt suicide, refuting previous research that suggested much higher rates.
In all honesty i think that hostility toward gay people comes out of ignorance and fear of the unknown.
Gay Pride is more then just a parade, it is a sort of protest. It is the gay community comming out and letting the rest of society know that not only do they exist, but they have a right to be in public. It is an expression of freedom of speech. As for the gay pride parade, you make a valid point there, I don't really see the appeal, if there were a straight parade people would go mental. The same as having black pride parades (or whatever they are called) if the same thing happens for white people, they are called racists, I don't understand the appeal of these parades, they are segregating.
You're right about the segregation part too, I think it is just a comfortable thing, it's nice to be able to hit on people without wondering what they sexual orientation is. It's obviously a lot easier to do that in a gay bar/club.
Somehow it's not racism when it's the minority doing the segregating, but that's a whole other rant/thread.
As others have said, most bigotry comes from fear of the unknown. Simply put, if you have that strong of a reaction to it something has to be motivating that reaction, and that is almost always fear.
Agreed.

Statistically there is no increase in neurological disorders in homosexual or bisexual populations. There is a higher incident of mental disorders that are not neurological in nature, but you see the same thing in any oppressed minority.
EDIT: I should mention that there is a somewhat reverse correlation, in that certain neurological disorders can manifest as bisexual behavior.

Being discriminated against most of your life and being told that your sexual orientation (something pretty fucking fundamental for everyone) isn't normal and/or imoral. It's a wonder that any gay people turn out without any mental problems.
these days if you didn't try some dick in college apparently you are close minded :awe:
I'm HAL9000phobic. I'm desperately afraid that one of these days I'm going to get sucked into a homophobia troll thread and never get out. Oh... oh no. Why am I here, what have I done... need to get out now!

Did you actually read any of the discussion? I think you are the boy who cried troll.

I'm not gonna deal with the "immoral" issue, since I don't agree with most "moral issues" anyway, but being physically attracted to a member of your own sex IS NOT normal...something, somewhere in the brain just isn't "wired right." Gay people ARE abnormal. Does that make them BAD people? Hell no, most that I've met are pretty good people, but at the same time, they've all had problems far exceeding their sexual orientation.
Good. You are deluded, and ignorant.
But I'm not afraid of you...so "phobe" does not apply.
If we met, I'd probably have a drink with you, watch some football, (not soccer...that shit's gay) or whatever...I don't hate gay people, I try not to discriminate against gays, but at the same time, I don't consider it to be "normal behavior."
BUT, WTF, I've been accused of being "abnormal" a few times in my life as well...
