Just wondering how does AMD determine warranty coverage?

Specifically in the case of my buying a used boxed CPU.
Do they go from the date code / serial number (like a hard drive RMA) or require receipts etc?

Thanks,

From first hand experience; they require a copy of your purchase invoice. Standard fare.

Thanks, I was just thinking of buying a used FX 6300 on fleabay and thought I'd check first!
Glad I did, I was thinking it was like a hard drive where the warranty stays with the drive regardless of ownership.

BTW I just bought a 'used' new Asus M5A97 EVO motherboard (a warranty replacement) and checked directly with Asus and it is covered for over a year and a half just from the serial number

I exchanged an AMD CPU without having to provide proof of purchase. It was just like a hard drive where all they needed was the serial number. This was about a year ago.

Can anyone confirm before I make a risky purchase?

At the risk of pointing out the obvious, why aren't you asking AMD if you want "confirmation"?

What are you expecting from anonymous forum posters that AMD couldn't tell you straight from the horse's mouth?

...Because I presume that the official line is that only the original purchaser is covered.
But I want to know the real world answer!
Thanks

You've gotten two conflicting answers from people with first hand experiences, and your solution is to then ask the same question again to the same group of people?

Well my real world experience was the online process requested something that was in my warranty booklet but a proof of purchase was not demanded.

I let it slip by, the listing just ended with zero bids.
Chip was up for grabs at a few cents over $100 shipped.

The seller had overclocked it for a month or two. And also had zero seller feedback.

Too risky, shame I really want to get this chip at this price!

Thanks for the input guys.
