Why???

Do you realize how many people would be out of a job if that were to happen? It would number in the tens of thousands. And I'm not just talking about Intel employees... There are all sorts of other companies that rely on income from Intel.

I realize that many people just view Intel as some sort of faceless evil corporation... But there are a lot of REAL people that would be affected by what some of you wish for.

Hey Wingznut,

Do you have any idea how much a mask set for current CPU costs these days?

I would MUCH rather see AMD get some big contracts and become as big as Intel than see Intel get cut down to AMD's size. This would allow AMD to produce better chips, improve their fabs (probably even get some of their own) and better compete against Intel. Intel in turn would have to compete harder against AMD, not to mention that AMD would be hiring thousands of new people and generating all sorts of new revenue into the economy. Having two struggling chip companies instead of one doesn't help anybody!

Not for sure... probably a couple of million.

"As for the initial question... I don't think AMD is going anywhere. (But then again, I said that about 3dfx. So, what do i know? )"

I was merely amused at this remark, especially when taken into context with your employer. Bias isn't necessarily a dirty word either; hell, I'm baised. As Kell said, it wasn't meant to be a 'malicious' personal attack.

Ah, I guess I took it the wrong way. My apologies.

And I didn't mean anything against AMD by that remark... I've never wished anything like that on them. Like I reiterated above, I would never wish to see people lose their jobs. It's just that I remember posting "3dfx isn't going anywhere" even days (probably hours) before they actually went under.

AMD staying alive would be in the best interest of us consumers (intel and amd fanboys alike ), as well as the general public and the overall economy.

funny thing is half of the nerd oracle out here wants microsoft to die and no one thinks that american corporation losing money (they pay taxes dont they?) and people losing their jobs is different because all cool nerds hate microsoft. and all cool nerds hate intel so deal with it. even though overall microsoft has gone out of their way to be more accessible to handicapt computer users (mainly intel powered systems ). Intel puts grown men in sparkly space suits and chooses to have them shake their booty on national tv to the sounds of its raining men or something, I tried to forget..

this nerd doesnt hate microsoft at all.. I actually like bill (but still thinks he should be able to afford a decent haircut..), hes a businessman not a programmer.
i do hold something against intel, they seemed very expensive for a very long time and still carry themselves in high regard even tho amd has been thwapping them in the nuts hard, reputation wise in the hardcore crowd.
MHO.

i dont understand how anyone with a brain could want any american corporation to go under.. I was half joking in my post earlier, I dont want them going under (and never said that) but wouldnt care if they swapped places with amd.. whats the difference?

as long as american companies dont get pushed out by our own consumers or our own taxes or wages, its all good.
a good reason why you should buy nvidia over ati, though I personally dont see as much a problem with supporting canadian companies as we want our border nations successful, who cares about taiwan.. we dont need any more mexicos bordering us and if we're going to give money away make sure its going home or somewhere near home.

-end rant

i think we all agree though both companies (amd/intel) are necessary evils.

Actually, Uncle Bill is both a businessman *and* a programmer. I believe he was like the first person to port BASIC to x86 or something (in his pre-MS days, obviously).

I think he actually did that in his garage using a copy of UNIX he licensed from AT&T (I think thats who it was).

If you think about it AMD's yields are simply pathetic, hovering below 70% on most of their CPU lines (I'm not sure about thier Flash lines) while INTEL's are over 95% (most are above 98%). That is a huge difference monitarily and shows how good the developement process is on INTEL's side. I won't go into the money difference in the cost per die, but if you are currious shoot me a PM. I'm not saying AMD needs togo under by no means. They have kept INTEL CPU prices to an affordable level.
