what do you do with all of it?

edit videos?
rip all your DVDs to Divx?
have 2 years worth of mp3s?

Here is what you do with storage:

1. Convert your games to ISOs (or whatever image file you like). Now whenever you want to reinstall a game, just mount it using Daemon Tools. All the games will be readily available and alphabetized so you don't have to go look for your CD.

2. Rip your DVDs to ISO. Whenever you want to watch a movie, just mount it using Daemon Tool and use your favorite DVD player to watch your movie.

3. MP3 storage.

4. Store all your applications. You don't need to look for your CD everytime you want to install a program.

5. If you want, you can also encode your DVDs to Divx for when you go out of town. I look as Divx more as a portable movie. Just dump a few on your laptop and you're ready to go.

You can ALWAYS use the storage you presently have. You just need a little imagination.

P.S. I don't even know how much storage I have. But it's an ass load.

In other words you spend $500-$1000 on drives so you don't have to walk 3 feet to get the CD or DVD you want.

In other words, I spend money on drive space so EVERYTHING is always at my finger tips. This is a centralized location were every machine on the network has access to everything on the server...well everything I want people to have access to. If you are in the living room, you can pick a movie you want to watch on the TV through the HTPC, which receives the DVD stream from the server. If you're outside on a nice day in your hammock, you can watch a movie on your wireless enabled laptop from a list of movies on the server. It's more of a matter of organization than "walking 3 feet." I have ALOT of software like I'm sure alot of people here do. I don't like to go looking around all over the place for a particular game or app I need to install. And having a movie at your finger tips is just plain awesome. And not to mention I don't have an ugly CD or DVD rack in my living room taking up space. I just throw all my DVDs and CDs in a box in the closet after I'm done ripping them.

74 GB (RAID 0 Raptors) (NTFS) - Windows XP
80 GB (FAT32) - Storage - backup and media
30 GB (Linux) - Gentoo Linux

Keeping the storage FAT32 allows me to read/write from both Windows and Linux. Linux doesn't support writing to NTFS very well yet, and Windows doesn't recognize the Linux partitions at all.

36.7 GB Raptor and 250 GB Maxtor in my desktop.

I sync my 250 to a spanned volume in my backup server consisting of a 40, 60, and 120. I also have a 4.5 gig scsi drive that I use for very critical stuff (also gets backed up to cd). I am paranoid, but safe.

He didn;t specify in the house or on one PC. The most I have on one PC is 250 gig, but I have over a terrabyte in the house. About 400 gig used, and most of it is games replicated over 6 PC's.

I just meant in general...

I kinda assumed, besides OS and major programs, people weren't storing the same file on multiple computers...

any way you slice it, a terabyte divided between 6 computers is still a lot of room!
