How Many Very Early Adopters?

With the impending release of Haswell, I was wondering about how this question would break down. I would count myself in the last category, though enthusiastic about new hardware, I have never felt enough disposable income was available to take a chance on the newest stuff, especially given the somewhat smaller performance increments that have become the norm. I'd love to know your take.

Always buy at release day if I want it. Hardware is very cheap compared to our disposable income here.

Honestly, I would, but my SNB desktop is still beast and I just bought an IVB laptop a few months ago, so I'm probably going to hold off.

I do want a Baytrail machine, though...

If I'm in need of an upgrade, I will wait until the next major new release and buy as soon as it's available. I'l willing to deal with bugs.

Not at all.

I usually wait until a new release, then buy what is then considered "previous gen" hardware...although I *did* just recently upgrade to an i5 3470...coming from a C2D.

So I'll probably skip a few CPU cycles, but I plan on waiting for AMD's 8000 series cards to come out then I'll probably pick up a 7850.

The first (and last) time I "early adopted" was Intel's i820 chipset...so...yeah.

I will buy it a day before it releases.

For personal use,I always buy the latest, but only when I need a new system. Since I just built a new system last June, I will probably skip Haswell, unless something breaks.

I will build some Haswell systems at work soon enough, but will wait until there is a good choice of boards with good reviews.

It comes to me that I might better have made this poll to ask the same question but as if cost were no object. I think the socioeconomic factor is the least interesting of the of the variables that make up our respective decisions. That said, I think I would move my response up only one notch even if cost was no object, since I don't think I'm taxing my 2700K too hard right now as it is. I'm more likely to buy a better GPU at this point, or maybe a monitor that can do 1440.

I usually like to wait 3-6 months after the platform has been out and all of the bugs / issues have been ironed out. Remember the z68 SATA fiasco? yeah, no thanks!

with the little 2500k I have, I think I will skip Haswell. I would probably upgrade after that.

Usually though, I upgrade within a year of a new release.

I have never bought anything on release date. Always 2 or 3 generations behind. I guess I am far from being an Enthusiast.

I'm a wait-a-couple-months kind of guy. But I won't be buying Haswell since it's not an appreciable upgrade.

You are posting on an enthusiast's forum, that counts for something, does it not?

The bug hadn't bitten me for a while, until a couple months ago I was still using an old HP xw8600. Granted it has twin quad core Xeons, but a decade ago I was literally buying several pieces of hardware a month, turning my castoffs into a folding farm and systems for the kids and relatives.

The relatives have all given up on desktops altogether, and I don't have room for a folding farm anymore (my old house had a nice cold basement). Now that the bug has bitten again I suppose I'll be trying to do some horse trading here on the forum to get my hardware throughput moving again.

I'm very budget constrained and tend not to be on the bleeding edge because of that, but again, I'm up for a challenge and will happily deal with bugs in order to get brand new hardware.

Last two PC's I built were made a month or two after launch.

It's going to be a few more years till I think about putting together another desktop.

I'm going to buy a Thinkpad Txxx when it gets a Haswell refresh, though. That's for work, so it doesn't really count.

Other components like drives and GPUs get refreshed when I feel like it...though not very often. I went from a GTX 460 to a GTX 660. My second box still has an ATI 4850 which will be fine until the day the whole lot goes out to pasture.

Exactly. I know the feeling.

I suppose I am an Enthusiast at heart

If money were no object I would always be upgrading.

I need a new PC because my i7 950 is a dog and runs at stock due to instability. The mobo has more bugs than a [redacted] and i cant wait to ebay the lot.

I might consider it after I see some real world OCs. Would have to really show real gain over my 3770k@4.6ghz

Was the z68 affected or only its immediate predecessors, the P67 and H67?

The closest I've come to being an early adopter were in the late 1990s when I never bought less than 64MB for a computer and last year when Windows 8 was on sale (I had nothing newer than XP).

If the performance increase is worth it (which it hasn't been since the introduction of the original i7 series, imho) I'll adopt as quickly as funds allow, usually 6-12 months, otherwise I'll wait until I can get it second hand.

Permission to use that saying!?

No, you may not (at least in the tech forums)

I love being an early adopter, it's just fun.
