A healthy way to gain weight is through weight training. Get on a training diet then go down to the gym and work out. Muscle weighs more than fat, so you'll do yourself good by putting on some extra muscle mass.

I have rheumatoid arthritis (which is also the reason I eat next to nothing, often) and so can't do anything that involves a lot of strain on my joints.

Excuse my naviete how does RA affect your ability to eat? It hurts to eat? what other body systems are affected?

I have to write this one down. A girl asking how she can gain a little weight. I can now count the number of times I've heard that on my thumbs.

Oh, and 195 (on a 5'10" frame). A lot more of it is muscle than it used to be. If I don't lift regularly, I can quickly get a little flabby

:| STFU - do you know how hard it is to make myself eat, and how closely I watch my weight to make sure I don't lose any more? A woman overweight doesn't have to worry so much about her health. If I do what I'm inclined to do, I'd drop weight in days, very easily. Do you realize how how dangerous that is? I have to constantly monitor what I'm doing and what I'm eating so I don't wind up having to be treated for it. That's a little worse, IMHO, than having to watch what you're eating because you want to improve your figure. So, thank you very much for pushing the cultural standard - I hope you never EVER wind up talking to an anorexic, telling her that she's lucky because she has trouble gaining weight.

Storm, RA is an autoimmune disease. Besides affecting the joints, systemically - so that all joints are vulnerable, it can produce major fatigue, loss of appetite, and other side effects. Those two I have dealt with, the fatigue mostly taken care of by the meds, but I am _never_ hungry, and always have to remind myself to eat, never feel like it, and often a few bites really convinces me I don't want to eat any more than that, and I have to anyway. The meds can produce all sorts of side effects too, none of which I have. The right side of my jaw is also affected by the arthritis, so it can be painful to open my mouth more than a little bit, at times.
Other than that, my hands, knees, feet, and neck are affected by the disease. On a good day, everything works. On a bad day, I limp to classes and come home and sleep. Mostly good days right now, but there is no cure, and the disease is degenerative.

HotChic,

Can you not eat because you aren't hungry, or because you don't have interest in food?

Because I know that even if I am not hungry I will still eat a steak if it is offered to me because I LOVE steak.

I think from the response to my question its because she isn't hungry in the traditional sense. RA somehow affects you appetite. My guess is since its an autoimmune disease, whatever produces the urge to feel hungry is negated possibly by the immune system. So you honestly might not feel "hungry"
but the "wizard needs food badly"

smidge above 6' (ok, actually like 6' 1" but smidge sounds so cool) and 150ish pounds (varies from 145-153)

Oh, btw, does this sound too heavy, just right, or too skinny? I am a guy (in case you were wondering) and am 21 years old but am not in the best shape (I have strong legs and no real tummy but I do have these annoying love handles) I was just curious how I am doing weight-wise

No, I don't...

Sounds like I touched a nerve there without knowing it. HC, I'm truly sorry for hurting your feelings, that was not my intent. I did not understand how serious you were being, I kinda thought maybe you were kidding.

I'm very sorry...

A woman overweight doesn't have to worry so much about her health.
Actually, that is far from true. Being overweight is actually more deadly than smoking, or so the newest stats that I've read say (insert grain of salt here)

So, thank you very much for pushing the cultural standard - I hope you never EVER wind up talking to an anorexic, telling her that she's lucky because she has trouble gaining weight.
Anorexia nervosa is a serious disorder, not one to be taken lightly.

Eating when you're seriously not hungry is not fun, it is work. No need to explain that one to me. Have you considered high calorie supliments? Have you talked to a doctor who specializes in this?

Other than that, my hands, knees, feet, and neck are affected by the disease. On a good day, everything works. On a bad day, I limp to classes and come home and sleep. Mostly good days right now, but there is no cure, and the disease is degenerative.
Genetic therapy is making incrediable strides every day. They will find a cure for this, or at the very least a better treatment. How soon is anyone's guess however.

*hugs HC*

I too am a fat ass..

I weight somewhere in the range of 370-340lbs (6ft also... hell, sounds like we could be twins. ). Haven't weighed myself in a few months. I've been watching my diet the last few months and have lost 4 inches off my waist. I'm not going to weigh myself as I personally think that is a great way to sabotage a diet.

Anyway, I'm fat, but I'm trying to do something about it.
