Microsoft consultant (security, AD). I help to secure the network of a high profile government customer and keep them off the headlines on CNN. I also help with their AD setup, doing design, security and performance consulting.

I make enough to be very comfortable in most cities in the US. In DC, it's just average.

bwahahahahah.

Don't talk money/how much you make.

There are two types of people:
1) Those that say how much they make and are generally WAY underpaid
2) Those that don't

Even my best friend (since age 4) doesn't know what I make and i don't know what he makes. Mainly because we are such good friends but partly because our income is dependant on the year.

Goose,

bolt turners earn 60-80K a year. I'm talking somebody who turns a bolt on an assembly line. What I'm trying to get across to other professionals is "those guys on the line? They are making more than you and don't have to worry about squat.""

Maybe I've been in OT too long. But the "wahoo! I make 70K a year" posts are pretty annoying. Mainly because they are so underpaid for what they do. what's even worse is they are proud of it. I don't have the heart to tell them that they would be better off working in another industry.

That depends on where you're working. If you lived in Seattle and made anything less than $70 - $90K, you'd never be able to afford a house. If you lived in some backwater Montana town, you could probably get by with $20 - $30K doing the same work.

Correct. All relative to location. 70K in my part of the country means your either in management or very near your ceiling. If your wife makes comparable money your probably living on a cul de sac in an upscale neighborhood around here.

Funny you mention it. My best friend is a IT Project Manager guy for a very large real estate firm that is taking over Denver. I know he makes a LOT of money. More than I make. But I can't say "more than I make, for sure" because I'm not sure -- I am surely a more skilled IT guy, whereas he is moving up the management chain.

Either way, we're both doing well but money NEVER comes up. And we've been best friends for almost 14 years. We promised to be each others best men ... and paychecks have never come up.

Kind of weird, now that I think about it. I guess there is just no reason to discuss it.
