I was blowing up because I had made several offers to either sell or buy and I was getting no response. Im in the service industry, computer support, and I know that even a simple reply to someone's message can go a long way.

REPLY
"Dude! I really like the modem your selling. I'm looking at another one and if the deal falls through, I'll get back to you."

Have we become so disengaged with communicating over the internet that simple pleasantries don't apply?

probably, I always put "if you pm, then bump", but I check my pm's at least twice a day anyway when I have stuff for sale.

There are quite a few of you out there. Others have gone to extreme measures, IMO, ignoring PMs if no bump is given even *if* the offer is at or near the asking price.

PMing w/o bump & lowballing are 2 completely different things, please don't confuse the 2.

I always reply to my PMs in my FS/FT thread, but any PMs about my post in the Freebies thread (where I said 8RDA+ ACCESSORIES not the frickin' motherboard) I have begun to ignore.

I also dislike the fact that some people (not sure if it was here) won't reply to PM unless you bump their thread.

why do they have to bump a thread if they've already sent a PM?

If I see something I want on FS/FT and the seller says PM is a viable means of communication, then I will PM him an offer. Will I bump? Maybe, maybe not, but there's no requirement that a PM must be accompanied with a bump.

no there's no requirement but it's considerate. otherwise the guy has to wait 4 hours to bump it.

 

i typically bump when i PM....but if that thread is already on the first or 2nd page i don't bother

Let's say that someone is selling an item for $100. I pm him and offer $80.

If I bump it, there's a chance that someone else will see it and possibly offer more. So, I see no point in that.

If I'm offering full price, then the deal is over. And again, no reason to bump it.

If my offer falls through, then I (usually) go back and bump the thread.


If the seller has a prerequisite to bump their thread, then I don't bother with it at all. I hardly want to deal with someone who is that uptight about something so trivial.

a response is never "required." a lot of the better traders do try to respond, but i never acknowledge a pathetically low lowball.

bumps are also not required. i avoid all threads that require a bump. it's those kind of people who don't deserve to have their PM's responded to in the first place.

i wouldn't want to deal with anyone that uptight either, but theres nothing wrong with requesting that people bump when they PM

i have trouble getting people to respond at all. i send a PM saying that i wan't to buy something and never get a response. i can only assume that the item has been sold because the post just dies but a simple item has been sold reply would be nice. at the very least edit the thread to show it's been sold. i have to go thru this at least 2-3 times everytime i'm looking to buy something. lately it's just been easier to go to ebay, less BS. thats just sad.

That's such nonsense. I'll look at it two ways to give you the benefit of a doubt, though.

1) Either you like the promotion of your thread and the items that you are selling so a thread bump by others helps you get more exposure.

2) You have subscribed to the thread and you'll get an E-mail notification prompting you to come back over to Anandtech and check your thread and any private messages.

Personally, I won't deal with people who require me to bump their threads prior to them responding back to a PM. I've had numerous great transacations from many great members here. I'll just look elsewhere for those who need me to bump their thread in such a manner.

I've bumped threads in the past. Mainly, if they were traders that I've dealt with in the past. Clearly, they are the ones that are deserving of a bump because they've proven their excellent ability at being a great trader to deal with.

I have a serious problem with people who think it's necessary for buyers to bump your thread. Let's look at it this way:

Bump = Advertisement so that more people see your thread / goods

If I go to Wal-Mart and buy groceries, they are not going to refuse to sell the items to me because I won't call up my friends and say, "HEY, WHY DON'T YOU GO CHECK OUT WAL-MART!!!", and they aren't going to refuse to deal with me if I don't put a Wal-Mart bumper sticker on my car.

Sure, it's considerate to share positive comments with others about a good business deal you had. However, it should not be required!

That said, I do always bump threads for people because:

-I sell items here often and know how much I appreciate bumps
-I subscribe to my threads, so I assume that other sellers subscribe too, and thus they get sent an e-mail to remind them to go check their PM's. It speeds things up.

I'm really getting tired of all this "_______ didn't bump my thread, so they're on my DNT/ignore list". WHO CARES? You got the PM, so you're only hurting yourself by losing business -- the whole point of a bump is to gain attention. So why in the world are you ignoring the attention that you've recieved?

NEXT: RESPOND TO PM'S! I don't care if someone is "lowballing" or not. At least tell them, "No, I'd like to sell this for what it's worth. Look here and see that my price is acceptable: [link to Newegg or someone else's successful sale for $X]"

It really pisses off a lot of people, or at least wastes their time when traders fail to respond. I've seen a few other rants on this forum about buyers saying, "I'll buy your [random computer part] immediatelly. Where do I send payment?" only to never hear from that person again. It seems to happen to me about 1/3 of the time I'm selling something even though I often respond to PM's in 1 hour, and never more than 12 hours...it's not like they forgot about me because I didn't give them a timely response.
