You obviously don't respect your roommate and she'll probably learn this.

The roast does sound delicious though.

Ok, so you plan to use your roommate's unused crockpot.

Oh the drama? I guess? It's her thing, ask her if you can use it. Don't use it unless you have permission. Simple as that. Sheesh.

Well it's a dick move if she's religious, as she would then need to buy a new crockpot (yeah I know it sounds silly but that's the way it is.) If she's vegan for health reasons or because it's "hip, cool, enviro-friendly" or whatever, then she really shouldn't care.

Yeah, because religious reasons are MORE respectable, right?

Please. It's a dick move, either way.

well, the other alternative is either because she feels like it or for health reasons. And the health reasons are negligible.

... Why are health reasons negligable, and religious reasons aren't? That's kind of ass-backwards.

yes. crock pot = slow cooker. it gets the job done.
Exactly. Time matters. Heat doesn't.

heh yeah heat matters.

i love my crock pot. we use it a lot.
Correction, heat matters, but temperature does not. You typically won't cook much above 300F. What's more important is even heat distribution throughout the pot so everything cooks evenly, without hot spots/cold spots.

yeah i was just being a dick =)

but you hit on the important part. get a good crock pot (if you going to use it a lot and try fancy crap). the better ones have better heat distribution wich does help cooking. Also some you can set and leave. the crock pot will keep temps even

This is wrong. You of course know that if she gets even a trace of delicious savory meat juices in her mouth she goes to vegan hell right? Are you prepared to live with that on your conscience?

Just get your own pot. It's not easy, but possible to tell when a pot's been used. And if the roomie's a vegan, make sure she doesn't own a gun. I know a vegan (dude) who had tuna thrown at him, then proceeded to chase down the thrower for a block or so.

I see your point... but your point sucks. I mean, what good is the damn thing sitting in a box? Is there some sort of special taste added to a food when you cook something in it for the first time? No.

If they live in an environment where they share things, what, exactly, is the difference?

so if it was a computer or a car, it would be ok too right?

Point is OP was specifically told not to open it up and decided to anyways.

But it's NOT a computer or a car. Your whole post is a waste.

But let's be a little more realistic here. I don't care how much I share with my roommates, none of them will EVER EVER EVER have permission to drive my car unless I personally hand them the keys or it's an emergency situation. This is because it's a F**CKING CAR, not a $20-$50 crock pot. If they break my crock pot I know they are going to be able to replace it. If they wreck my car, insurance might not cover it at all and lord knows they can't just pull a new car out of their butt for me.

I have no problem with my roommates using my computer, either. They have their own, but for kicks and giggles let's go with this. Say for some reason they REALLY just wanna use my computer. Fine. The situation is still entirely different. I wouldn't buy a computer and just leave it sitting in the box for 3 or 4 months. That'd just be stupid. If I just got home with it, the first thing I'm going to do is turn it on and play around with it, so it's really not a question of if they can get to it first. Let's go back to the breaking it thing. If, by chance, they break my computer, I know it may be a stretch for them but that is something they might be able to pay back. It is well established with my roommates that if you can't afford to or would not replace it, you don't touch it. Not that rough to understand.

It's purely about respecting other people's property. Whether anyone else feels it's a waste to leave it in the box is meaningless.

And the fact that so few posters see anything wrong with using it without permission is surprising to me. Bunch of rationalizing just to excuse inappropriate behavior and a lack of respect.

I seriously doubt all the same people would be fine with people using any of their stuff without permission. And don't bother saying that "it's not the same" because it is the same. You don't take other people's stuff without permission, period, end of story.

AFAIC, if I let you use my stuff then I should be allowed to use your's, right? I get the impression based on the way things were told that the people in this house/apartment/whatever share their equipment. I bet one of them has a TV in the main room and everyone watches it. I bet the same goes for tables, couches, dishes, flatware, etc. If it was a matter of "We all have our own separate stuff and nobody uses each others" then I don't think he would have even touched it. So what's the big freaking deal? If she wants to bitch about "being the first to use it" then maybe she should act like she actually gives a damn about it.

The reason I don't find anything wrong with this is that I'm not an uptight, whiny, selfish, IDIOT that thinks being the first to use something bears any significance to the status of the product. The only person that would even make a big deal out of it shouldn't even be in a living situation with other people because they are an ASS and a CRYBABY.

If I were her, and I realized that you did this, I would let it slide and not say a word......but you should beware of ANYTHING made in that crock pot by her from this day forward......you never know what it might be.....believe me....payback would be a major b!tch.

And if you specifically asked them not to use your up and running computer, but they did it anyway for no good reason, you'd have no trust issues with them going forward? It's not so much about the pot, it's the request by the roommate that they not touch this particular item of hers that she got as a xmas gift. It was a simple request. They ignored it for the hell of it. I'm thinking if the roomie had never asked them not to touch it they probably wouldn't have used it, but the forbidden fruit of the crock pot called to them. OP even recognizes her position and asks "bad" or "worst". I voted "bad" because OP could've borrowed without permission and wrecked roomie's car. That'd be closer to worst.

If the OP's roommate had a policy where it's OK to touch her stuff as long as it could be replaced, then I would agree with you. That's clearly not her policy from what the OP said, is it?

How about a situation that's like the one being discussed? You tell your roommates not to use a certain brand-new item of yours. They use it anyway. Is that OK?

I'd call that pretty funny. If she gets mad, just buy her another one. Although, I'm rather mean and if my roomies did that to me I'd be rather heated.
