I see the dilemma:

http://www.hubbardscupboard.org/kindergarten.html
All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten
by Robert Fulghum

Most of what I really need to know about how to live
and what to do and how to be I learned in kindergarten.
Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school mountain,
but there in the sand pile at Sunday school. These are the things I learned:

Share everything.
Play fair.
Don't hit people.
Put things back where you found them.
Clean up your own mess.
Don't take things that aren't yours.
Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody.
Wash your hands before you eat.
Flush.
Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.
Live a balanced life?learn some and think some and
draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work everyday some.
Take a nap every afternoon.
When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic,
hold hands and stick together.
Be aware of wonder.
**********************

It appears we have a conflict in the Rules. I don't know if these are in ascending or descending or random order of importance. Imagine what the world would be like if no one flushed?

Again, I'm asking what the real significance of the roommate using it first is, ESPECIALLY after 3 or 4 months.
It's about respecting other people's property and their request that others not use it. That's all. It's not up to anyone else to decide whether their request is reasonable or has "timed out", because it's not their property.

You guys really need to back the train up here and ask yourself what was originally said. It's not that I don't get that, it's that I think that's really f'ing stupid. If you wanna be a crybaby about using a crockpot first that's fine, but I'm going to think you're a complete idiot.

What was originally said: I'd like to be the first to use the crockpot
What you said: I don't give a fuck what you want to do with your shit, I want to use the crockpot

Oh really, I said that? DID I? Maybe you should borrow my reading glasses. I haven't used them yet, though.

Let me break it down for you:

OP: "So my roommate got a crock pot for Christmas from her boyfriend. She told us then that she would like to be the first person to use it."

You: "The idea is to cook our roast, clean the crock pot and put it back in the box so she is never the wiser." aka "I want to use the cockpot." Then: "The reason I don't find anything wrong with this is that I'm not an uptight, whiny, selfish, IDIOT that thinks being the first to use something bears any significance to the status of the product. The only person that would even make a big deal out of it shouldn't even be in a living situation with other people because they are an ASS and a CRYBABY." aka "I dont' give a shit what my roommate wants"

Got it?

I really don't know what you're trying to imply here... I was quite up front with how I felt about it, and the whole time my comment has been that it's completely stupid to be uptight about it. I mean, I probably have a dozen posts saying the same thing already and it's apparently pretty hard for people to understand the difference between not comprehending something and thinking something that you understand is completely ridiculous. I didn't use anyone's crockpot when they didn't want me to. At all. I've not been in the situation where that's been an issue. I think it's stupid that someone would be upset about it. How hard is that for you?

I think the OP is an asshole and all other people who see nothing wrong in this are also assholes.

It is still her crockpot that she specifically stated she wanted to use first. It doesn't matter if the reason is the stupidest reason on earth or anything, its hers.

If she had already used it, then I would have had no problem with OP using the crockpot.

Well, this takes rationalizing to a level I had not expected.

Anything in the kitchen is communal property, use it. Ignorance is bliss, keep her ignorant and you will have bliss.

Yep. Entitlement mentality is deep rooted and hard to get rid of once you have it.

This thread got entertaining.

I fall into the "OP is an ass" camp.

(Dang! Forgot to put some of the words in my post in all caps.)

Wow OP you are a fucking douchebag. It's common courtesy to not go through your roommates stuff if that boundary is already established. What makes it worse is that you know she's a vegan so not only are you using her crock pot, you're using it for things she has moral qualms about. way to go asshole

I think that you should have respected her property and wishes.

How was the pot roast?

The idea is to cook our roast, clean the crock pot and put it back in the box so she is never the wiser.
I have a better idea: wait until you digest the roast, then [disgusting acts redacted].

You have to respect her property whether she's using it to your satisfaction or not.

I agree one hundred percent. After she specifically told you that she wanted to be the first to use it, you went ahead and went behind her back and did what you felt like doing. What exactly is wrong with you? And I thought I was an asshole.

better idea would be after you cleaned it, take a huge dump in it and then wrap it back up

I was eating a carrot downstairs while my roommate is playing some COD4, and I mention how good carrots are. He goes on to talk about how good they are in pot roast, slow cooked over 10 hours with a huge hunk of meat and onions and everything. We look at each other with the same idea, we need to make some pot roast.

So we go off to the store, purchase all the ingredients and set this thing up. The idea is to cook our roast, clean the crock pot and put it back in the box so she is never the wiser. The kicker is, she is vegan. This roast has meat + milk in it (milk is for the cream of mushroom soup that we put in it). So we are using her crock pot for the first time to cook meat and dairy products. Bad idea or worst idea?

I guess it doesn't matter now, we are committed. In about 9 hours it will be done and ready for consumption. It's a scumbag move, but dammit that crock pot has been tempting me since she got it.

You can do the exact same meal in the oven...
