How to configure IP addresses?

I'm currently running DHCP on my win2k and nt 4.0 workstation and everything seems to work on on my win2k but I'm having trouble with my nt system.

During the installation of the NT machine, it asked me if I wanted to use DHCP and which time I said 'yes' not knowing that you need a server to administer the ips. And now my NT system is constantly poping up a window telling me that DHCP couldn't find an IP address.

I've read very little about assigning IP address, but not enough to get the correctly done. To my understanding, I need to assign each machine an IP address as well as a Subnet mask. Could someone please offer me some help please. Thank you.

Seems like I also need some values for the Default Gateway.

It depends on what the IP address are for your current network -- it has to be on the same subnet as the other computers (unless you're using a router). Descrcibe your network set up in more detail, please.

Yeah....if you have a router or some kind of device that supports DHCP then you might just have a configuration problem with your NT machine not grabbing an IP address from your router. Be more specific and you can get more specific answers.

Thanks for responding guys. Here's my setup:

I connect to the internet on a dial up. So I don't have any routers or such. Each of my computers (1 win98se, 1 win2k, 1 win nt) are all set up to use DHCP. Though the win98 and win2k takes awhile to boot up (which I'd like to shorten by assignin it ip addresses) they seem to be ok.

I currently have all the computers networked via a hub and they can all see each other and I'm able to access each computer after setting the permissions, so that's a plus

I honestly don't know what my current IP addresses or subnets. If needed, how would i find out on my win2k machine? The win2k is my main machine that I'm on and the others are for my brother and testing. What other information do you guys think I need to add? Thanks for the help guys

Yes, you can assign each PC their own IP address and submask. For a LAN, you can assign each PC with a unique IP 192.168.0.x (where x is an integer, ie. 1, 2, 3,...), and the submask is 255.255.255.0 for all PCs. Usually just assign the IPs in order like 192.168.0.1, 192.168.0.2,....

As a reference if you ever need it in the future, you would use the inconfig from a command prompt to find out your TCP/IP settings on a NT machine, NT4 or 2K. Use the /all switch to see all your settings, so it would look like this. C:\ipconfig /all. Of course you can look at your network settings after you install the IP's but ipconfig is quick and is similar in detail to the winipcfg from Run on a 9X machine.

I think the problem you are having is related to the fact that you do not have a dedicated DHCP server setup. Are you running win2k server or workstation. If all you are trying to do is share files/printers for a simple network you do not need to be configuring TCP/IP accross the whole thing. Just install NetBEUI and it should allow workgroup access and share file/printer. If you must do TCP/IP, setup a DHCP server on either a win2k/nt server or there are some software that will set it up on a workstation/pro machine. I dont really understand, though, why you are trying to setup a DHCP server when using a dialup... you do not have access to more than one IP to give out... unless this is for personal teaching/practice... than just set up a dhcp server...
