Hey everyone,
I just want some info on how to copy DVD's.

Basically what I want is to be able to copy DVD to DVD, or I would LOVE to be able to Copy the DVD to my computer, either as a different format or as an image so I can burn it to a DVD later on.

REason is, my nephew watches his sponge bob, etc DVD's, and has been destroying them. Just want to make a copy and let him destroy copies rather than the real thing.

What is the best software/process for doing this? Free is good if possible, just don't want to spend tooo much money. I have a dual layer burner as well.

My friend, you need Alcohol 120%. I've been using it for years to make legal backups of software I own and to do emulation for games I have. Works like a dream.

No. For games/software sure, but not movies.

Besides, Alchohol isn't free. Not legally free anyway.

Also, DVD Decrypter works better.
DVD Decrypter + DVD shrink = all you need.
Both those programs are no longer actively being worked on, but they are still by far the best free ones out there.

You have a problem with 120%?

Other than the fact it is not free - what is wrong with it?

Nope, i have used it in the past.
It's just not the best program for his needs.

As you mentioned though, for games & software it's great

I have been using DVD Shrink for the past month and happy with the results.

Putting the DVD to disk for future use.

1.) use DVD DECRYPTER to rip the movie into your harddrive

2.) resize /remove trailers using DVD SHRINK. then burn or keep the edited files in your HDD for future viewing /burning

DVDDecryptor + DVDShrink. You can keep the files on your hard drive uncompressed, but the average DVD takes up ~5gb, so I hope you have the space... alternatively you can compress them using various programs (I prefer Gordian Knot), but they won't play on most DVD players (newer ones supporting divx will work) and it takes a few hours even on a fast cpu. On the up side, you can fit much more on a dvd or your hard drive this way.

I have to agree for backing up your DVDs you can't beat DVDDecryptor + DVDShrink. Unfortunately Lighting_UK was recently forced to quit developing DVDecryptor, he was threaten with legal action so his site is gone. For the time being but you can still find the latest version hosted by some of the mirror sites.

you'll find a shrinker for 10 bucks

otherwize, the decent ones with more advanced featuers go from 50 to over a hundred bucks

but if you want free software, just get the stuff that wuz mentioned up there

Another vote for DVD Decrypter + DVD shrink. All you need for DVD format. If you have Nero, it can even burn your DVDs.

For converting to MPEG4, use AutoGK (along with DVD Decryptor), and download the latest XViD binary (the mpeg4 codec). I can play XVid encoded movies directly in my DVD player (philips 642/37 - $60). You can fit 3 movies on a single DVD in this format.

You don't even need Nero

This is how i do it.

Rip with Decrypter (better success for rips than Shrink)
Re-encode (shrink) with Shrink, saving as .ISO
Burn .ISO with Decrypter.

No need to pay for anything, or use the becoming-bloated Nero

I've just been using DVDShrink for the whole process. What advantage would adding DVDDecrypter to the mix give me?

Good luck getting DVD Decrypter.
Its no longer being supported or hosted on the website.
I know its freeware and some one could just send it to you but its no longer being updated.
Make sure you get the last version out 3.5.4.0

There are still tons of places that are mirroring DVD Decrypter, & even if they were all gone, you can grab it on some torrent site (which would be perfectly legal).
If it disppeared from all the P2P networks (which it won't), then you can always just PM one of us who has it.

The funny thing about shutting stuff down is how it's so foolish since it only makes it easier to find

Ever since DVDShrink stopped active development, DVDs with newer protection schemes have come to market. These DVDs cannot be ripped directly by DVDShrink, and that's when DVDDecrypter comes into play.

Unfortunately, because DVDDecrypter's development has also been halted a couple of days ago, it will not work with any future DVDs with brand-new protection schemes. Right now, it still rips all known DVDs though.

Second that. I use DVD Shrink for most all burnings that I do, but once in a while it will have a problem ripping the DVD, at which point I use DVD Decrypter. But for 90+% of my burning I use DVD Shrink only, mainly because it is just a one step process.

I've downloaded DVD decryptor from the link that was posted in a previous post. (Thanks btw).

What is the newest version of DVD shrink, and where can I find that? I can't seem to find the link to a download myself...

Thanks guys for all the help, it's been really informative and helpful!
