If one has a EtheRX Kingston Workgroup Hub, Model KNE8TP/WG, WHAT IS IT, Workgroup, Lan, Network, Peer to Peer, ??????
I've decided to help a friend figure out how someone else set his small office up, so when can both mantain it. In his back office is a above mentioned workgroup hub with six blue wires, and one red one, and they go to a juntion bracket, which in trun has seven wires coming out of it that go to the outlets in each room next to each PC. The wires going to each PC are blue cat 5 crossover cables in each PC, but one has a red one. As you can tell I don't know much about networking. I need to know what someone set it up as, so I can start to figure out how to set this up to share files, and printers. That is all that is needed at this time. Six of the PC's run Windows 98, and one runs Windows XP. They are mix of Compaq's, Dell, and HP PC's. I would like to remove all of the network drivers, and reinstall them, in otherwords start over again, so I know how to do it, and then set up the printers to be shared. I have all of the driver disk.
Does one of these PC's need to be setup as a server?
What is the protocol I will use?
Depending on what I will need to do, does anyone have a direct link to a page that will walk me through this step by step setup?
Thanks in advance.
Ps you may see this posted around the web. I'm trying to make some headway by late Sunday.

Wow!! You have quite the mix of info there. First off, the hub is just a hub, it doesn't make a workgroup, LAN or anything else. It simply enables one to create a network or LAN (Local Area Network). Peer to peer is a method of sharing files and peripherals over said network. The workgroup is the common factor among the contributing PCs in the network or the name of the networking group. The Cat5 cables are probably all straight through patch cords except the red one which should be a crossover.

That's pretty much a brief and simplified rundown of the components. My personal thoughts are that if you don't know what these are, you have no business messing with them till you do. If you still intend on persuing the endeavor, feel free to ask any questions you may have but don't be suprised if your told to go do some research.

If I can be of any help, feel free to PM me and I'll help as much as I can.
