How to transfer between computers?

I have a labtop and a desktop. Both have networking cards. What kind of software can I use to transfer data from one to the other and can I directly connect the computers with just a ethernet cable? Is there any freeware also that will let me do it?

Just get a crossover cable and network both computers. You could also get a parallel to parallel cable. MS has a built in program that lets you copy files via the cable.

Yes, you can try, like Oyeve suggested, a direct parallel connection.

But do a search on the web - I was sure that I saw a lan-lan connection program without having to have a hub/router in between.

1) Get a crossover cable, hook the NICs up directly.
2) Make sure NetBEUI is installed on each machine.
3) Enable file & printer sharing if you haven't already, & share the things you want to transfer.
4) Drag & drop via Network Neighborhood.

This should also work fine with TCP/IP, but NetBEUI is much simpler for this type of stuff.

No, you cannot use a direct parallel cable. You need a special parallel cable that is made for file transfers. It's just like the twisted pair crossover ethernet cable where the send and recieve wires are crossed at one end. For your situation, your best bet is to get a crossover ethernet cable and just network your computers together. You won't need a hub.
