Hp Envy SSD

So I bought an SSD for my HP envy. I wanted to use the recovery disk and install windows 7 (from recovering disk) on the SSD not the original. But it wont let me do this. It doesnt give me an option and then installs it on the original hd which is slow, 5400. So I was wondering how I could do this. Is there an effiective way to clone one HD to another. Then I would be able to have all the drivers and things would work correctly instead of installing a brand new windows which I can do and go one by one and installing all the drivers. Anyone has had luck doing this? Thanks for your help?

Is the recovery on the original HDD, or actually on disc (DVDs)? If on disc, then remove original drive and install with only the SSD in the notebook.

If you can still boot up on the original HDD, see if you can make a recovery set. Most of the time it will allow you to make one recovery set onto DVD.

First, I did make recovery disks. And second, I did try that. Taking out the original HD and just keeping the ssd. It said it would not install. Any other options?

how large is the original HDD ? how much data compared to the size of the SSD? Is space a factor here?

use acronis to clone. it supports SSD alignment. other tools such as PING and clonezilla probably also support proper alignment but i'm not certain.

Is Acronis easy to use. How do you use it? Can you close the hd and then it will boot up. What I did was I copied everything from that drive to the SSD but it would not boot and said it had an error when it did. Thanks. Some boot file was missing..

You can't just copy all the Windows files as it will miss some important boot ones. Acronis True Image is very easy to use, I'd recommend picking up a copy.

Id just get a utility like Speccy, find your Windows 7 CDkey, if its not listed under your battery or somewhere on your laptop and reinstall windows fresh, get the drivers from HPs website.

Which version of windows do you have? I can link you to an Official ISO so you can burn it to a CD

See Ive done that before and my drivers did not work correctly. But if I have to I will. It was kinda annoying and I rather not. I will try using the Acronis method tonight and if it doesnt work then I will have to resort to the other way. I will let you guys know if it works correctly.
One more question, with Acronis will it work correctly. Like will it copy all the boot files so it will be possible to work. I just want to ask before I end up buying the program.

Windows 7 and 8 OEM installs activate via a key stored in the BIOS. AFAIK the retail media will not work for reinstalling.

I have a problem using Acronis 2013. So my SSD is 120 GB and my original HD is 750 GB. When I use the recovery disks, it puts the operating system on the 750 GB HD. That is okay, but when I try to clone it, it says that it cannot because the 120 is much smaller. So even when I try to split the drive it still has 300 GB on it, using disk management tool. Anyone had this problem before and know what we can do?

you'd need to use a partition resizing tool to reduce the current partition down in size to about 650 gigs or so. then create a partition in the now freed up area of 100 gigs or so. then install windows to that new 100 gig partition. then clone. acronis should be able to do the resizing iirc, and also i think current versions of windows can do partition resizing as well. there is also freeware tools such as parted magic which can do that.

needless to say, you should back up anything that you'll miss if one of those operations were to go wrong (i've never had one go wrong, and you should always have backups anyway).

How much space is actually in use on your drive? Acronis can't clone to a drive that is smaller than the amount of used capacity on the source drive.

Ya. I just gave up and used a windows 7 cd and reformated it. It seems much easier and I dont have to worry about all this partitioning crap. Anyways things are good, but has anyone ever done this with an HP envy. My quick launch doesnt seem to work correctly.

You'll have to navigate HP's support site and download the driver. I don't see your specific model number mentioned in the thread, so I unfortunately can't give you a direct link.

I have gone to HP auto detect website, and tried installing some of the drivers, and what happens is that they just fail on installation. What I mean that they look like they are installing and then the window disappears and it comes up with the window "did this program install correctly, yes or no".

I dont really care for the hp software, but would like the volume icon to come up when adjusting volume. I believe that is on the quick launch but the quick launch doesn't load. Anyways if anyone can offer any help like always i will be grateful.

Here's the link to the download page for the Quick Launch software, which sounds like it does what you want. If the setup doesn't automatically come up with a UAC prompt, then it probably will fail. If that happens, right click and choose Run as Administrator.
