HP Laptop running seriously hot

Hi

I have HP Pavilion DV6 3006tx laptop, Specs below:

Intel Core i5-430M processor with 2.26 GHz; turbo 2.53 GHz
Intel HM55 Express Chipset
ATI Mobility Radeon HD5650; 1GB dedicated Graphics DDR3
15.6-inch LED @ 1366x768
4 GB DDR3 memory; 500GB SATA HDD
Win7 64bit

It ran out of warranty about 4 months ago, Its is running very hot, sometimes it hurts to touch metal/allow parts as these are really hot, especially when I am playing games, not really latest ones but NFS Shift, GRID etc

So I decided to test it and downloaded a tool called IntelBurnTest and stressed the CPU and at that time couple of other softwares were running as well. To test it I also started Chess Titans, a 3D game in windows. The readings I got are shocking IMO, took a screenshot. Any advices what I should do??

BTW I am an engineer and I can confidently open up the laptop myself and replace equipment. I use this laptop daily for work purposes. However I can fix it on weekend myself. Screenshot of HW info tool below. Note: CPU Tj is 105 degree Celsius

At 105 C, the CPU should be totally destroyed. Yes, if you can take it apart, clean it out. Sounds like cooling is blocked. Laptops often take in fresh air from below and through the keyboard, and vent through the sides.

Blow it out first before opening anything.

No don't do this all you'll do is either spin the fans the wrong way and back dust into the bearings, or at the very least shove the stuff back into the case where it will only serve to get sucked back into the fan and end up right where it is. Laptops need to be torn down to be cleaned properly.

I do agree with Corky, it sound alike a blockage. Give it a good proper cleaning and you'll probably be fine.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I downloaded HP technical manual for this laptop today. Yes I think opening it up and cleaning it thoroughly would be a good idea.

Should I also remove the heat sink assembly and re-apply thermal paste as well?

Since I am opening I am thinking of doing it as well.

Are you sure HW Monitor is reading right? I mean, I don't see why it wouldn't be I guess, but Core IX CPU's TJunction is 100 degrees C I thought. I don't think I've ever seen a mobile CPU hit 105 degrees. It shouldn't even be able to hit 105 degrees without shutting down.

Yes - clean and reseat the CPU with proper thermal compund. Don't blow into the exhaust vent - that will compress the dirt and lint back inside - it has no place to go. Vacuuming is first aid, but it sounds like you are beyond that. Yes, the sensor could be reporting wrong, but Too hot to touch suggests it is probably right.

Tj for this CPU is 105 degrees. Yesterday it did shut down once. Right now I am using it and it is idling at around 55 degrees. It was 35 degrees when I started using it half an hour ago. But if I load CPU at 100% it goes to 100 degrees within few seconds but it stays at around 100-105 degrees and it never went over 105 degrees, but strangely it kept going without shutting down. Dont know why?

Your pic says the max CPU is 218c, and 5106 RPM.

Wow! Is that the theoretical max, or WTF? I didn't know a CPU could spin that fast. Must be special paste.

yes its 105

Yea OP clean it up and clean the thermal pads that are on the heatsinks and apply some good quality thermal paste.

Envy s tend to run a bit hot.

The CPU can hit 105c thats its highest operating temp, anything over and it can be damaged, I assume the built in protection does not hit until 105+

Gave the laptop a good cleaning, it took me 3 hrs. Took every thing apart, cleaned it and applied new thermal paste. Heat sink portion between fan and cpu was full of dust, fibres. It was blocked. The fan was of little use since the air inside the laptop was trapped inside. Anyway its working like a new one now. Its idling at about 40-45 degrees. Even under 100% load the maximum it went was upto 84 degrees and as soon as it was de-stressed temp came down to 45 degrees in few seconds, which was not the case earlier. I think laptops should be deep cleaned once every year. Took some pictures, when I took it apart:

Added later: (Small correction) Actually, portion between fan and heat sink was blocked.

I learned this lesson years ago. I took apart my laptop after it would experience massive slow downs during gaming and even you tube clips. The fan on teh gpu didn't sit flush with the heatsink. There was literally a 1/4 cm layer of dust trapped there. It was unbelievable. I'm surprised it didn't catch fire or something ridiculous.
